Actually, they always have wing beans. :) This particular gene just accents them.

Maybe it helps them grip their own hides when they coil up into a ball? Their encyclopedia entry says they also dig with their wings and tail, and if you give them the partner gene Strike there are suggestions of possible secret beans on the underside of the tail tip.
