This time, there was no peace on the full moon's night. There were to be three hatchlings and as the moon rose, its pale light washing over the clutch, the first dark cracks appeared in their eggshells. The first two siblings hatched at nearly the same time - twin Pearlcatchers with dark scales and shining golden eyes. They seemed to share a deep bond that Argent and Cauchemar recognized the moment their children hatched. Cauchemar approached her children first, reaching down to nuzzle the remaining fragments of shell away. The first child showed the markings of a witchkin, while his sister inherited the full array of magic bestowed upon a Witchborne. Between the two of them, there was only one pearl to collect and store their shared memories. Argent approached, carrying the tarot cards that would determine the siblings' fates. Both drew the same card, the queen of wands. "This is quite unusual" Cauchemar whispered, looking down at her children with a smile. She cast a worried glance at the third egg that still sat quiet and unmoving. Argent gently nuzzled the final egg, finding that it had grown cold and the shell was discolored with an ashen grey hue. He met Cauchemar's gaze and shook his head sadly. They nearly abandoned the final egg when finally, it tipped slightly and a faint tapping resonated from within. "Perhaps there is still hope" Argent chirped happily, although Cauchemar grew worried, the scent now resonating from the egg making her snarl uneasily. When the hatchling finally tumbled free it was an Imperial with the markings of a Witchborne, yet the smell that resonated from it was unmistakably vampiric. Before Cauchemar could act, the child pounced upon its siblings with fangs bared. Argent dropped the cards, one of them fluttering to the ground with the face up that showed the III of Swords. In a panic, Cauchemar was quick to attack the vampiric child, snapping its wings between her teeth as she pulled it from the nest. The thin webbing shredded easily between her fangs as she threw it to the ground with a low growl. Argent's panicked voice pulled her from her trance and the vampiric hatchling fled from the nest leaving its parents to tend to its injured siblings. Despite their best efforts, only one of the Pearlcatchers survived. Calliope, she was called, and though she lived, she carried the fear and pain of her sibling's fate with her in their shared pearl. She would not forget what her sister had taken from her. |
