Least Concern The Broad-billed Motmot is a fairly common bird of humid forests, warm lowlands and foothills of Central and South America. At about 12 inches long, it is one of the smallest members of the family Momotidae. They are nonmigratory, sedentary birds that are most frequently seen in singles or pairs. The broad-billed motmot is considered to be a species of least concern by the IUCN Red List of 2016. It is common within its range, but populations are being negatively affected by deforestation.

Fun Fact: These birds hunt in a way that saves energy, called the “sally-strike.” From a perch, they will examine their surroundings until they spot a prey of interest. They then fly out to snatch the prey before returning to their perch to feed.

Electra was among the first dragons to hatch in our lair, and from an early age, she took on the role of storyteller, keeping an oral tradition of history in both spoken narrative and song. No one understands the history of this clan better than Electra, and she is always happy to share a story with anyone who asks.

Although Electra has been part of this clan nearly from its beginning, and is older than a great many of the dragons here, because she was born here the older dragons still think of her as a youngster. It might be in part because, when she was born she was the cutest baby anyone had ever seen (and she's never quite lived that down). Plus, her personality fits that of a perpetual teen, in all the best ways. She has a youthful charm that endears her to children and adults, alike. Children follow her around, begging for stories or puppet shows, and in the evenings, a small crowd will usually gather to hear her sit near the fire and sing, accompanying herself on the lute.
