Night paced the space of the room, his penetrating glare on full display for all of those to see.
I just hope I made the right decision. I did what I had to do, I couldn't take her torment, any longer. Night felt a shiver run down his spine at the thought of the confrontation with his mother, how he screamed he would make something of himself. He didn't remember what started it, it didn't really matter that much, all of the snide comments, the "I hate you" in the heat of the moment, never spoken of, never apologized for. And of course, the constant critique of how Night used his skill set.
And I will. Night thought this with a cold passion
I just wish I didn't have to do it alone...
Night ran the streets at twilight, his necklace pounding like a second heartbeat, if one could see his face, deliberately tucked low, they might see a tear clumping his silky fur. His breath was burning in his lungs, but fury kept him going where fear never could have. After nimbly climbing up an abandoned merchant stall, he pounced his familiar route through the rooftops.
"Left. Right. Left again at the stall with the blue roof, go straight until you see the cloth merchant" He muttered under his breath.
When you just react like this, you don't have time to think or feel, you can only react. I know mother says it's going to be my downfall, but it is so exhilarating sometimes, to not have to plan out your every move for someone else.. Tattered green roof.
I'm here Night thought grimly, for the events of the past hour were catching up with him. He leaped through the space where a window should be, where a window
was in most of the other buildings in town.
It's not fair.. Night thought bitterly
and it's not right. He works his butt off here, more than everyone else, definitely more than me, and he is still suffering more than everyone else, just because that's how things are. "Glade." He said roughly, he tried to keep his voice calm, but it just came out hostile, rough, and much
much higher than he would have liked. "You there?"
A Snivy poked his head out of the rough entryway that passed for a door to his sleeping quarters. "Night!" he replied, his voice cheerful and possessed with warmth
How is he so constantly, infuriatingly happy? "Whats up, you usually don't visit at this time of day... or night". His voice was tinged with confusion now, both asking and not asking the question he meant
"Did something happen?"
A terrifying question really. I don't exactly know how to answer it, and gods know I need to tread carefully. I don't know if he thinks I'm a friend or not, but he sure as Moltres needs me, and like it or not, I need him. "Um..." Night's voice cracked, at it sounded a lot more feminine than he would of liked for this moment. "H-have you ever considered joining the guild?"
Blunt. Confident, well not really. But thats my way of approaching things, and Glade knows it by now. "Night no. They don't need be and besides, you'd hate it there. You hate anyone but that gut feeling in your stomach telling you what to do"
And everyone. And everything. And me. Night added mentally. He knew thats what everyone was thinking, why did normal people even try to hide it-"Night, you have the oddest look on your face. Night, did you already join? Night, what did you
do?" The accusatory look on Glades face made Night look down in embarrassment-and panic.
Am I really as bad as everyone thinks I am? Instead of replying his fellow low-walk-of-life, he simply upturned his sack, spilling all sorts of expensive fruit, meat, and even silverware. After a few moments of quiet, and with a smirk, looked Glade dead in the eye and quipped "We poor starving street Pokemon must be so hungry when we go to the guild. Its like they've never seen a proper meal in their poor, miserable lives." And with that, he took a Leppa berry, threw it up into the air, and ate it.
After the initial shock of the revelation, Glade seemed to be scarfing up a majority of the meal.
I just hope I brought enough. The snivy couldn't do consistent physical labor due to the heat, and he wasn't trained to do much else. Night didn't know how often he got the eat, but due to the vigor he attacked everything resembling a berry with, Night doubted it was often enough. Since he saw the Snivy shivering on the streets one night, he did his best to help out. He hired him to do get a collection of seeds for the market across town, relay a message to a client here, pass out flyers for the big fight going on in the underground that day. He originally though of it as "community service", but over the years he began to care for the Snivy, anonymously at first of course. A berry left here on a holiday, a good word with an organization that smuggles, and eventually, a small place at half of its original price.
Not that I am ever telling Glade about that last one though. He knew that it would be unwise, Glade hated most underground work, and wanted Night to do as little as possible as he needed.
Besides, its not like its risky, I never get caught. And besides he's obviously enjoying the meal. He ate little himself that day, smuggling a feasible portion for someone his size.
And besides, the believe us to be more starving than we actually are. On a whim, he decided to pipe up, interrupting the companionable science that often happened when the two of them were together.
"You do know that I'll still be here for you, no matter what, right?" He flashed his prankster smile, hoping to restore some of the spark of determination that always lingered in his companion- no parter in crime's gaze. "In fact, if this is what I was able to steal on the first day, Imagine what we can get once I'm on missions! If I could sell a looplet on the black market, what if I can even steal a progress device! I could get you the largest place in town, I could have any plant I wanted."
I wouldn't have to steal. Since almost the beginning, the two of them had away of understanding what the other meant by what they didn't say.
"And still- if, if you change your mind, I could mentor you. You could do practically nothing and we could get practically anything we wanted! What would you buy if you could buy all the money in the world. I think I would get those expensive silver earrings in Happiny's shop! A love of jewelry was one of the things he carried over from his old life. It was only natural he supposed, he was a thief. And a good one too, his name was one of the first 5 you thought of when you needed something lifted from a shop window.
So nobody would dare question my fancy new earrings.
"The thing is, I could totally see you doing that"
Still pacing, Night realized his face broke into a goofy grin sometime during his trip down memory lane. He fixed his face into something borderline sullen, then glanced at the others to see if they saw him looking stupid. He didn't think they did, but he wasn't really here to make friends, so it didn't matter as much as it did on the streets. He just hoped none of them recognized his face, or name, from the streets and the underground. Maybe he should give an alias, because he didn't think he gave his name yesterday.
I'm going to do it. To show Mom or to help Glade, I'll do it. I'll show them all, and I will never abandon my own, unlike most of my blood. I'll show them all what I can do, except the stealing thing of course.
