The large Guardian weaved her way through the underbrush of the greenhouse, seeking the location of Mora as she greeted her. "Good morning, my friend," she returned once she had found the Skydancer, taking a moment to admire the yield of fruits she had managed to collect. She could smell the citrus tang of the grapefruit and it helped to wake her up more. Looking back to Mora she noticed the slight sag in her wings and her eyes lacked the alertness they normally held and she gathered her friend had stayed up late. She refrained from suggesting she take a short nap or a moment to relax as she knew the invitation would be declined. If Mora was drowsy now, the chill of the mountain would certainly wake her up.

"Yes, we should depart immediately. The weather is clear for now but could change at any moment. It would be best for us to clear the mountain range as soon as possible." Making sure they were both ready to go, Saiph led the way back out to the foyer and to the door that led to the spiral staircase. The path opened for them once they reached the top, only needing to be unlocked from the outside, and she took a breath before stepping out into the snow.

The air was crisp, condensing into little clouds when they exhaled, and the line of the horizon was illuminated by a very faint red glow as the sun was preparing to breach. The snow beneath their feet gave a soft crunch as they walked, compacting beneath them so that they didn't sink in passed their ankles. Saiph craned her neck to stare up at the twinkling stars that scattered the darkness of the sky, taking a moment to appreciate their surroundings. "It is a truly beautiful day," she commented, smiling. With one last look to her friend she spread her wings, giving a nod before she lifted with a single beat, a flurry of snow surrounding her before she took off.

"This greenhouse is a small blessing for the school here. There's precious little food in the Southern Icefields, certainly not enough in one location to feed an entire school of burgeoning magic students... but right here, fruit grows all year round. I do love it so... but duty calls." She mentioned all this as they were on their way out of the greenhouse, casting one last look back at it before stepping outside and closing the door behind her.

Going back up the spiral steps wasn't so bad. It was unfortunate it wasn't built with the idea to just have the dragons fly up, but the way it was, it far too tight for any breed other than Faes. Still, she liked it better than that first step out into the snow... and when it came, the frigid air stung her face. Still, the slap of coldness to her had definitely woken her up.

She followed Saiph's gaze when she looked up, noticing that the colours of sunrise had indeed began to creep into the sky. It really was pretty outside today, and completely cloudless to boot. She loved flying on cloudless days. "It is indeed a beautiful day. A beautiful day to fly!" She stepped out of the way of flying bits of snow when Saiph took off, but threw her momentum forward into a leap to take off after her.

She caught up beside her, saying quickly before they gained speed and the howl of the wind became impossible to be heard over, "Now, I did read up on some maps quickly, and my suggestion is we fly directly north, over the islands, and at the border to the Starfall Isles, we go directly east into the Windswept Plateau. Going directly northwest from here is fastest, but nobody can fly through the Maelstrom unharmed,, so we'll have to detour."

Giving a sharp nod to signal that she had been heard, Saiph altered their route just slightly so that the rising sun was to their right and slightly behind as they made their way towards the Frigid Floes. As the sky was clear and the wind did not resist them they were able to stay at a low altitude and the snow proved to remain untouched for most of the way. It wasn't until they reached the Snowsquall Tundra that trails from wildlife could be seen in the white expanse which soon petered away where the grass was brave enough to grow. This small valley was the only place on the frozen province that held any sort of color and although it was small and scarce it held a unique beauty.

It also marked the end of the continent and soon they were passing over the chunks of ice that made up the Frigid Floes. The wind picked up here, cold and biting and heading south, so the two dragons flew above the clouds which had begun to gather. Saiph feared that the weather was beginning to fail them and hoped that they could make good distance before it finally broke. The two Deans had flown in all manner of weather and storms, of course, but that didn't mean they wouldn't rather avoid it. To the Guardian's pleasure, though, the weather didn't worsen by the time they turned due east, the Windswept Plateau only a few miles away. They would more than likely touch ground just well before noon.

Of all the areas they would be flying over, the Snowsquall Tundra was Mora's favourite. They flew directly over it on the way up, and the small but hardy trees were testaments to how nature could survive nearly anywhere. There was even a sparse population of deer and rabbits that could scrape by on the tough grass that grew there. It was a welcome change of colour from the bluish white of snow, even if it was only to brown.

But the tundra slowly became more and more broken up into islands of ice, bobbing on the water aimlessly. When they turned east toward the sun, Mora looked down most of the time to avoid being blinded, but she liked watching the water rush by. Even when the weather worsened and they began to fly over the clouds, she still loved feeling air rushing over her wings and rustling in her feathers.

By the time the sun was overhead, Mora had spotted a break in the cloud cover, rushing ahead from the pace they'd set to flight at, she investigated the spot, circling over it, "Over here!" she yelled to Saiph, hoping she'd hear, "It's Reedcleft Ascent! We're in the Windswept Plateau!" To further her point, if Saiph couldn't hear after all, she dove through the clouds, shaking off water when she was through to the other side. She picked the spot that was least covered in reeds to land in, looking up to see if Saiph got gotten the message.

Through the wind that howled passed Saiph's ears she wasn't able to hear her friend, but the way she circled the air the Guardian knew they had arrived. She dove after the agile Skydancer, pinning her wings as she entered the reeds and quickly turning her body so she landed on her feet. With a sigh she stood to her full height, wings stretching and rotating behind her after their long flight. A gentle breeze danced through the stalks, catching in their hollow centers which caused them to sing. The air smelled fresh, lacking the crispness from the mountains that she was used to, and held the scent of the sea.

"Would you like to rest first, Mora, or get right down to business?" she asked. Though her wings ached and she felt a bit hungry, the Guardian had much better stamina than her smaller, leaner friend. Whatever she chose to do she would go along with. Saiph took a moment to observe their surroundings, noting that they had landed on one of the lower levels of the Ascent, the Zephyr Steppes blocked from their view only by the strange forest that surrounded them.

"Ah well..." Mora began, voice faint. Just then her knees buckled under her and she wobbled dangerously. She pinwheeled her arms and staggered a step or two, regaining her balance fairly quickly. "Whoo. Perhaps some food and a rest? I apparently need a bit of time to regain my land legs." She sunk to her knees of her own accord, pulling her bag off of her back onto the ground in front of her. As much as she would have liked to just gather some reeds for her lunch, they were stringy and desperately lacking in nutrients.

Instead she pulled out a a cloth-wrapped item and unwrapped it, revealing it to be some kind of purplish gelatinous brick. "Made these myself," she mentioned, taking a bite and chewing it over, perhaps longer than normal, "Mm. Bit chewy, I suppose. It's dried fruits crushed together and set with edible resin I make from the sap from my trees... it's very good, quite high in energy. Lasts forever even in humid conditions too."

While she snacked, she looked around. Currently she really saw nothing but reeds, but she knew the area wasn't that large. "Really... I suppose we might want to start out search near the Ashfall Wastes border, if this dragon is Fire originally. They may have wandered over here and... did whatever they did to get their powers. They may still be hanging around. Failing that, the largest Wind dragon community is that city in the sky on kites they have off the eastern coast."

Azure eyes went wide as Mora stumbled and Saiph took a step forward, bracing for a fall. As the Skydancer regained her balance she calmed, taking a seat next to her friend on the ground. As the Nature dragon revealed her strange meal she produced her own: a few strips of dried beef and chips of dried apple and raisins.

"Impressive, Mora," she commented between bites. "I myself have never been very skilled at cooking." She chuckled, remembering when she had first begun to broaden her skills in Fire magic. The excited Guardian had immediately attempted to roast a duck, one of her favorite meals, and it had not ended well. Since then Esme forbade her from ever attempting to cook again.

At her friend's suggestions of where to look she craned her head upwards. The sky shown in slivers where the reeds did not grow, and puffy white clouds drifted by. "The Cloudsong," she murmured in wonder. They had been to every corner of Sornieth during their travels but not once had they ever visited there; a dragon-made city in the sky would not hide any magical secrets or items. Except for now, it seemed. To say she was only a little excited would be an understatement. "Yes, searching the border would be a good start," she said, remembering where she was and she dusted her hands of the crumbs after she finished eating. "If that fails we can begin to ask if anyone has seen anything unusual." At that the glint from the bracelet that adorned her wrist caught her eye and she gave it a look, tapping the small pink gem with a claw. "It would also be helpful if this charm assists us." Saiph looked over then, a look of seriousness on her face. "What do you believe has happened to gift a dragon with the power of control over an Element that is not theirs?" She didn't fully expect an answer. The Dean of Lightning had spent a better part of her night speculating but couldn't come up with any feasible idea. The very thought seemed impossible to her.

Mora couldn't help but chuckle slightly at Saiph's envy, coughing as a bit of her fruit brick went down the wrong tube. She remembered the Roast Duck Incident just as well as Saiph did. Mora had never really considered herself a cook, but she did like to experiment with the plants in the greenhouse every now and then, and occasionally it was even quite good. This brick was her most ambitious project yet, and aside from the mouthfeel being akin to somewhat grainy cement, it tasted fine.

Mora watched as Saiph looked to the sky and murmured the name of the city. Mora knew that her friend had spent a long time walking the world before she came to the college, in that specifically Guardian way they called "The Search". She'd eventually found the Allseer and came to the college to be with her... and Mora was a bit jealous that she'd come straight to the college from the Viridian Labyrinth.

She stood when she finished her food, tucking the cloth back into the bag and hoisting the bag onto her shoulders. She looked at her charm as well. It certainly was beautiful, but at least up to now it didn't seem to do anything. It was certainly magical... but how wasn't expanded on. "I hope so. I'd love to see what this does.

"A dragon... using a power they weren't meant to wield. Yes, I gave it some thought. Of course all I can say is conjecture. There's no records of it anywhere that I could find. But still, if this proves to be true and not an elaborate ruse -especially if it's related to that ancient tablet- then this power must be old. Ancient even. And unless it's somehow a dragon that has lived longer than anyone... I'd say it's some kind of supercharged artefact. It has to be, to be found now but still be related to tablet. Surely it's some kind of stone... perhaps a gemstone even. Something that could last so long and still be usable now. That's my theory.

"But we won't find it by standing around theorizing. Let's do some legwork, yeah? We'll go to the border first and see if we see anything." With that she took a bit of a running start and hopped into the air, clearing the reeds a bit narrowly, flying low under the cloud cover.

"A magical gemstone?" Saiph echoed, a thoughtful look on her face. "Perhaps...but that only makes me wonder where it originated from. I can not see any normal dragon creating such a thing, which would mean it must have naturally formed, if this is true." She made an interested noise at this small revelation. "Hopefully we will find out soon enough." At that she stood, dusting herself off and giving her wings another stretch before she took off.

The wind seemed to follow them wherever they went no matter the direction they were flying in, as if it was happy to guide them. It made the trip easy, allowing Saiph to simply hold out her wings and glide. She felt light and free and dared to be childish, stretching her arms out like she did when she had been just a hatchling, running in circles and imitating flight as she waited for her wings to grow big and strong. They crossed over the Steppes soon enough the deep abyss that separated the Windswept Plateau and Ashfall Waste came into sight.

Saiph descended, getting a clearer view of the surface. The ground here was dry and cracked, the heat from the volcanoes that awaited just across the canyon hot enough to feel from here. Aside from that it was mostly flat and unobstructed which would help ease their search. From what the Guardian could tell there was nothing of note; no charred ground or burned shrubbery or any other sign of Fire use. She chanced a glance to the Arcane charm she wore only to see the gem as still and dim as before. Letting out a disappointed sigh she circled around, trailing the border to the southern point and as close to the Twisting Crescendo she dared to go.

Mora merely shrugged when Saiph pointed out that a gemstone that can grant additional magic knowledge must be then naturally made, as dragon-made was unlikely. She had no idea what kind of thing could grant such power, or how it could possibly have came to be. All she knew told her it was impossible. She let those thoughts go, turning her mind to the present. No point in musing over things they knew nothing about.

The trip around the Windswept Plateau went quickly, the wind seeming to be friends with them, always being at their backs no matter how often they turned in their attempt to find anything. But the land below seemed to be only endless grass and reeds. Still, Saiph seemed to be enjoying herself in the wind, arms out like when dragon are newly hatched and don't have the strength to fly.

Mora sighed, breath lost in the wind. The entirely of the Windswept Plateau was so flat that there was nothing to hide; there were no caves, no overhangs, nothing that wasn't visible from the open air. Even in the swirling clouds of the permanent storm that raged on the west coast, they skirted as close as they could but still saw nothing. After clearing away from the Twisting Crescendo a little to avoid being sucked in, Mora flew up close to Saiph, slightly over her. She didn't bother to try to speak over the wind, but reached over and touched her back, before speeding ahead, indicating by nodding her head and pointing toward the kites of The Cloudsong. There really was nothing out there, so the only place left was the city and asking around.
