Day 17

It new year! Happ new year :D
The expedition dragons take a break today.

Real talk, I'm just playing rule of cool today - the item I pulled was a battle item and the last thing I want right now is to lose one of three dragons to a death streak. Getting through battles while trying not to lose anyone is already super scary, and getting knocked back down to two dragons would kill the fun I think. Especially because now that we have dragons at level 7 training fields is no longer an option for levelling new recruits, its going to be a huge struggle to get any new dragons into the locke and for this situation to arise so early on really sucks. In hindsight I should have started with three dragons but unless I want to do some retconning it's a bit too late for that.

I don't know if there's anyone actually following this thread, but if there is, what would you do in this situation?

[center][u]Additional writing (catchup for Day 14):[/u][/center] [i]Run.[/i] That was the only thought that filled Seph’s mind as the animated creatures that roamed the land during the longest nights of the year gathered around them, baring their metallic fangs. Nero had other ideas, of course, but they were interrupted by the call of their newest companion. “Fall back! We can’t stay here!” The Undertide’s voice rang clear through the woods, carrying an air of urgency. Seph glanced around; Seafoam had already begun to retreat, and Abyssen wasn’t doing so great fending for himself. The situation was looking dire. They had been running and fighting almost non-stop since Seafoam had joined their group - not by choice, of course. Today was the day they had finally been forced into more dangerous terrain by the Shade Avatar’s lingering presence in the Training Fields, and it was NOT going well. Seph turned back to his brother. “Nero, we gotta go!” Nero snarled in response, eyes still locked on the enemy. “We can handle it.” “No we can’t!-” Seph exclaimed, and almost as if to confirm he was right, a grunt came from their side. Seph snapped his head over to see Abyssen collapsing, wisps of magic fading around him as he had taken a hit from a spell cast by one of the woodland’s monsters. Nero lashed out at the nearest target, paying their falling companion no mind. Seph looked between his brother, Abyssen struggling to stand, and Seafoam behind gesturing for them to flee, and in an instant knew what had to be done. Nero’s snarling face gave way to shock as Seph wrenched control of their body away from him and bolted to pick up Abyssen. Nero yelled angrily; “What are you DOING?” Seph didn’t care to listen. It took too much effort as it was to forcefully take control like this. They reached Abyssen just as he had managed to push himself off the ground, and Seph scooped him up. With one swift movement he lifted the Fae to sit in the space between their heads, and Abyssen yelped as he landed on his back. “Hold on!” Seph called to him, and as soon as he felt Abyssen’s grip on their mane, he took off running. They caught up with Seafoam quickly, and the group dashed between the trees to escape. Before long, the clicking and dragging noises of the enchanted monsters chasing them began to fade. “Are we… safe?” Seafoam asked between breaths. The group came to a halt under the cover of some lower-hanging branches. The woods were deathly quiet. [i]Too[/i] quiet. Then a low growl rang out. Seafoam’s eyes widened. “What is that?” She whispered. The others turned to follow her gaze, and froze up. Lurking there in the brushes, the Shade Avatar crept along the ground, searching. It didn’t seem to know where they were. Abyssen signalled carefully to Seafoam to be silent and still. The creature crawled around the brambles, its hundreds of legs moving in unison and its glowing eyes scanning the area. After an agonising few minutes of held breaths and tensed muscles, the monstrous Avatar disappeared from view, and the quiet sounds of the woodland returned. The group let out a collective sigh of relief, and slowly began to move towards better cover and a well-deserved rest. ------ [center][u][b]Day 19[/b][/u] Pinkerton pull: [item=Parsnip Harvest] Apparel Apparel coin flip result: Heads A dragon from Astralkeep joins the challenge. Run.

That was the only thought that filled Seph’s mind as the animated creatures that roamed the land during the longest nights of the year gathered around them, baring their metallic fangs. Nero had other ideas, of course, but they were interrupted by the call of their newest companion.

Day 20

NeronSeph (Level 7), Aspen (Level 1), and Seafoam (Level 6) travel to the Woodland Path, and fight off only a single pack of enemies.

Aspen falls in battle, and becomes the first dragon to join the Shade-claimed.

Personal notes: Poor girl just got here, but I accept that this was a mistake on my part for not checking elemental weaknesses and thinking that I had an ok starting pack, only for her to get blasted with a spell and instantly ohko'd. Of course that's an RNG moment as well but alas. Also makes for kind of awesome storytelling potential, and it had to happen at some point, so I'll take it.

That’s not exactly my usual job,” she considered the proposition. “Wouldn’t a task like this be more suited to… I don’t know, Zero? I’m an enforcer of law.” Rujin laughed teasingly. “Now Aspen, you know I don’t recruit people on a whim. You are a seeker of truth, are you not? If this expedition group has deserted, should they not be brought to light?” Solimis snapped his head towards Rujin at that comment, and gave a snort of contempt. “Abyssen wouldn’t desert.” Rujin glanced briefly at the imperial, but continued. “...And if they have been set upon by some villain or other, then that ought to be punished as well, no?” Aspen closed her eyes, thinking. “You have a damn good way with words, Rujin.”

The imperial’s voice came from behind the door to the research wing, signalling to enter. Aspen could hear the tiredness in it. She opened the door and entered to see Solimis at the entrance desk as usual, looking exhausted. Rujin stood by his side.
