One of the unspoken rules of the troupe (even more important than "don't interrupt Asparagus when he's napping" and "make sure to keep dried seaberries on hand for midnight snacking purposes or there will be Trouble") was "don't ask about the chicken."
No one knew where Rivale had gotten it; it had just shown up one day, seemingly out of nowhere, and never went more than a few yards from her. Pingali suspected she'd stolen it from some town they'd stopped in, but given that the chicken had only appeared when they were on the road and several days past their last engagement, that seemed unlikely. Deceit opined that it had magical powers, and was likely cursed somehow, but no one had ever seen it do anything more sinister than eating beetles, the chances of that were slim as well.
The troupe finally decided to ignore it. It wasn't doing any harm, after all (at least that anyone can tell, Deceit had muttered), and Rivale enjoyed having a companion to fuss over and spoil. But they still kept an eye on it, because who knew if it might turn out to have fowl intentions after all?
I'd apologize for the pun but I'm not actually sorry ;D
