In the nights, Midnight and Dash could hear the howls of a pack of wolves in the distance and the rustling of creatures through the underbrush near their cave. The Tangled Wood was almost louder at night than it was during the day, but the two dragons weren't native to the Wood and couldn't imagine becoming nocturnal like many of the other creatures in the forest. Many dragons living under the wings of the Shadowbinder were awake during the day, however, so Midnight and Dash were able to trade and converse with others without losing any sleep.
Sometimes, the howls got closer, and the small clan kept themselves awake by conversation to make sure they wouldn't be caught unaware by the wolves, just in case they were the same creatures that had attacked Sleek before the clan's formation. Both dragons were acutely aware that they weren't strong enough to fend off a pack of whatever those had been if they chose to enter the small cave. Dash had constructed a crude fence of spiky logs around the opening to the cave. If anything bothered to investigate, it would run into a gate made of bone chimes strung on a frame across the entrance. Although the defenses weren't much, they made Dash and Midnight feel much safer than they would have with their cave open to any intruder who might wish to enter.

When Dash picked up the apparel to put it on her head, a jolt ran through her body, shattering the plated scales that ran up her sides. They melted back into her body in strange shapes. Although it hadn't hurt, Dash, startled by the sudden change, swayed and collapsed and had to be carried home by Midnight.

A long filament, sprouting from the forehead. This one gives off a golden glow when danger is approaching.

The attacking party this time was a Cockatrice.
Dash and Midnight should have stayed in the Training Fields.
But an ill-timed critical hit landed on Dash, and Midnight, again, couldn't stop the bleeding.
Dash was buried next to Sleek, and Midnight planted some of her acorn hoard over the grave.

The only thing this creature has in common with a spectre is that certain dragons are terrified of them.

After several days of hiding in the cave alone, Midnight heard the sounds of a two-legged dragon crunching through the woods, talking to himself merrily and occasionally stopping his speech to imitate birdsong. She poked her head out of the cave to witness the unusual occurrence. The cave wasn't near the regular path dragons followed through the woods.
The Wildclaw, adorned in purple flowers, grinned at her when he saw her. "Greetings, fair Skull-maiden! I am Opus, and I'm looking for a clan to accept me as one of their own. Would you happen to have space in your cave for me?"
This guy was weird. But he did have sharp teeth, and Midnight was all alone. "Can you hunt?"
Opus made a face. "I'm afraid I often scare away my prey. Flowers, however, I am a master at."
Well, Midnight could catch enough prey for one dragon, and she could live off of flowers. "You can stay with me for now."

Keeping an Augite creation in good working order involves semi-regular patching and allowing the creature long stretches of slumber.

Opus is a jovial dragon who enjoys imitating birdsong, tapping his feet, and acting. He often pretends to be an old-timey dragon and speaks to Midnight like she's a warrior princess, which she secretly enjoys much more than she pretends.
Opus isn't exactly stealthy. He talks a lot and sings when he isn't talking. This makes him pretty bad at hunting, but he is a self-proclaimed master of gathering flowers. Since he can't eat flowers and probably wouldn't want to even if he could, he strings them into garlands and wears them or gives them to Midnight for her to eat.
He doesn't remember anything before waking up as a young dragon in a hollow in the middle of the woods, where he lived with a family of badgers for a short amount of time before being driven out. Fortunately, it didn't take him long to arrive at the cave after that, so his inability to hunt didn't make him go hungry for long.

A passing traveler gave Midnight a package! Inside was a robe thing, so she put it on. Nice!

Meanwhile, Opus was gathering flowers in the woods to make a necklace for Midnight. Inside a hollow tree stump, he found a scroll case. Naturally, he cracked the case open and read the scroll. He'd never seen most of the runes on the parchment before, but they must have been magic because his wings started to tingle as soon as he put down the scroll.

When he returned to the cave, Opus gave Midnight the necklace he'd been making for her, and Midnight told him that the previously feathery patterns on his wings had straightened into lines.
