The Lady Volaire was still and silent;

dead.

The hasty burial adornments of veils and incense and post-mortem healing did little to mend the savagery and wickedness of beastclan weaponry that littered her pearlescent hide.
“Why?” Lore asked, in spite of himself. It felt wrong to be in the Volaire address, now that it had been thrashed by fighting and sacked of everything that had made it one of Bavatica’s crown jewels.
“Volaire’s big,” Kune said. Indifferent. “Plenty of investments, properties… they sit on the Council, you know this. When a giant falls, the scavengers start flocking in. And Volaire doesn’t have a direct heir.”
A noble family too, then, was among the casualties. Lore’s face twisted in grief. So much was gone. Destroyed. The beastclan attack had been savage and incisive, all at once.
“Surely there are cadet branches?”
“Probably,” Kune said, with a shrug. “Maybe two of them, last I heard.” He shook his golden head. “I’d love to say this can wait. But the heirs of Volaire? They’ll be at each other’s throats once word gets out.”
He shot one last, dark look at Lady Volaire’s body.

The Valent are a notoriously private family with a mythology rife with ruthlessness and underhanded dealings. While it's thought that the first Lord Valent parted from Volaire in goodwill, it's often said he'd set out with insurgence in heart— carving out a clawhold in whatever scrap the illustrious Volaire had overlooked.
Alternately revered and regarded with suspicion, the Valent's quiet savvy and acumen has made it something of a dark horse among houses. The generally low profile the Valent have kept until now has been attributed to a biding of time to strike, however it remains to be seen whether the family retains its ambition beneath its prior complacency.

The dancer may be no more, but this eerie ornamentation still carries on ringing. You feel compelled to twirl... (Special thanks to BallpointTattoos!)

Strangely enough, House Vylos has not made a point of their connection to a House as renowned, as ancient, and as illustrious as Volaire. There is speculation; after all, the first Lord Vylos has been rumoured to be a Volaire byblow who won a fortune on the fields of war.
The current House Vylos, however, is by no means a martial House. They have downplayed their soldier roots and focused on growing their wealth and dipping their claws into the profitable dye and textiles trade, peddling woven and shimmering cloths from distant cities in the marketplace of Bavatica. Whether this quiet mercantile House retains the stomach for blood remains to be seen...
