You guys ever feel like you're late to the party with certain pieces of media that were super popular and had a bustling community?
For example, I recently got into Animal Crossing New Horizons, and I feel like barely anyone talks about that game anymore, even tho it's still the newest entry in the series (for now). And there's not really any fandom around it anymore or anything I can really engage with.
I had the same situation with Five Nights at Freddys a year or so ago. I get really into stuff that was SUPER popular and now nobody thinks about it anymore lol.
How about you guys? Anybody else feel the pain?

I feel you. I got into NiGHTS fandom pretty late, so it makes me really happy to find other fans in the wild.

For me, every day is World Kindness Day.

I feel that pain, I do a lot of splatoon art, and art of things it feels like no one talks about, but oddly enough the thing that gives me a smile is someone going. "Hey I used to love that, I am gonna go back to it."
I could also go down a massive rabbit hole explaining how social media algorithms, and the culture around it and hype kinda ruined having things be loved a long time...but I don't have the spoons for that

I got into Feral (The former MMORPG) a bit before the shutdown… I only got like 1/5th a year with the game before the situations occurred and I quit to support my fellow friends…
Yeah it only lasted 2 years, but I got 1/6th of the time the game it was up. The servers were dying then compared to launch.
Also I got into Sacristuff’s music right as they got bullied off of twitter. So many people believe the fake drama that was started and now her music isn’t popular as much. I wish more people decided to stay after VIRUS died out in popularity due to the trend dying.
There is one thing I got into during the second burst of popularity that I wouldn’t consider dead at all but really moved on from my particular focus and the only reason I truly joined in on the fandom…

Oh my gods, I was literally talking about this in another thread regarding Homestuck, but I feel this way too. I'm always a, "late bloomer," when it comes to movies, TV, games, etc...
My favourite film is Bladerunner (1982), and lately I've been watching a lot of films from the 80s-90s. My favourite book is from 1884 (Flatland, by Edwin Abott Abott).
You know, come to think of it, I feel like the internet (moreso social media) fixates on the "NEW" a lot, but I think appreciating older works is also pretty important.

I think you have an extremely good point. I feel like social media in part has bogged down the discussion of media to an extent and it saddens me. I would like to hear your thoughts about it sometime once you have regained your spoons!

So much pain felt from this.
I like several TV shows with fandoms that don't really exist/aren't active.
Guess that's what I get for liking "niche" programs that are form the 50s-70s [emoji=obelisk sad size=1]

Not quite outdated, but I became a fan of the Subway Bosses from Pokemon during the Legends Arceus-caused newbie boom in 2022. However, Ingo and Emmet had a huge fanbase spring up back when Pokemon Black and White originally came out circa 2011. Like, they easily could've been dubbed Tumblr sexymen had the terminology existed at the time.
Their original fanbase dwindled away over the years and was basically nonexistent by the time either of them actually became plot-relevant, so I'm left staring at the fan works that were left behind and wondering what it was like to be a fan of them back then. (Answer: it probably would've given most of the current fanbase a heart attack)

This happens to me a lot. I'm not entirely sure why but I think it may be because now that I'm an adult I'm going back to check out things I might've overlooked or missed as a kid.
Back in 2018 when I went to college I got pretty into the Metal Gear games despite the fact they hadn't made games for years at this point (Survive doesn't exist). I think this was the first thing I got into that was beloved but barren. Unless you count me reading Dune in 2015 as a teen way before the modern movies came out.
In 2020 I got into the Half Life series to kill time during the pandemic. I had seen the games before, but barely remembered them having watched my dad play them when I was way too young. I mean I guess there was some buzz around that time but it mostly seemed to be for a fan AU and not the actual canon.
A couple years ago I got back into reading with old Star Wars novels. Like the now non canon trilogy involving Thrawn and stuff. Its a really fun book series! But it also came out in the 90s so people either don't know it, or are that obnoxious kind of fan who acts like a know it all for knowing obscure stuff. The books were huge when they came out but I wasn't even born yet.
Tbh, I don't think it's a bad thing to get into something late. Although it can be a bit frustrating to not have anyone to talk to about it, it can be a bit relaxing. Sometimes parts of fandom type stuff get really exhausting for me and its nice to have something all to myself, or just shared among friends.

I would also like to hear this if you ever feel up to it. I agree, I feel like social media and algorithms have forced everyone into the next new thing constantly. Nothing gets to breathe anymore and it feels really exhausting. I don't have the time or money to watch/read/play everything people are hyping up, especially if they movie onto something different the next week. Maybe this is a factor to why I tend to get into older stuff nowadays.
