I don't really have the time or focus to manage a hatchery, but all my breeding pairs are themed in some way so the resulting kids look nice and or for a fandragon project.
naming and shaming this pair because they haven't given me WHAT I WANTED

I tend to lack space, so selling the resulting fodder is my best way to expand as long as I don't give in and buy another pair... ah... oops... back to the fairgrounds...

Split the seas!
Sunder the skies!
Swallow the stars!
I'm finally trying out making a real "breeding pair" (thank you everluxes I love you everluxes I didn't need those gems anyway <3) but for the longest time I just mashed my dragons together based off of their lore or whoever was free to breed. I wish I could go back in time and throttle early-game me for wrecking my clan's entire bloodline, these dragons are all so related to each other ;0;
I used to exalt babies and lvl 1 dragons as well just bc I was too lazy to sell them or level them,,,,, it's beautiful how long you can play this game doing ur own weird thing and be literally none the wiser

I prefer to have specific breeding pairs.
The outcome of the hatchlings doesn't really matter, but if two dragons make pretty hatchlings than I'll make them into a pair.
Otherwise I'll pair up dragons that I think look good together regardless of their color ranges.

Meow meow choco chow.
Think about it.
I breed permas and if their hatchlings turn out ugly I exalt them for lair space or coins for lair space. I DO NOTTTTT slap 2 together because in my opinion if you get two dragons not of the same breed its all ruined. I also maybe will ~dump~ (gets bucket of hatchlings that are ugly) them in the auction house. I am also currently cleaning my lair soooo ;_;

I have dedicated fodder pairs for breeding, though I'm not that good at actually training and exalting them... maybe I can get around to it for NOTN!
I've become a bit particular about hatchling lists, so I practically don't breed my permas anymore :O Usully if I am tempted to breed them it's because I want them to have a child to live in the lair but I typically just do that by buying a new dragon instead of breeding anyway.
I'd honestly like to have a way to be guaranteed a one egg nest or be able to cancel nests until I got one so I don't have to worry about extra hatchlings on the list that will probably be exalted. I think I would be more open to breeding a couple permas if I could!

I tend to just slap two dragons together that seem like they'd make good looking babies, lol. I'm not dedicated enough to run a hatchery or start breeding projects.
^^ I slap two dragons together and make fodder children. I'm usually tempted to select parents that will produce cool-looking offspring, but that leads to me keeping one or two or twelve hatchlings. x.x so now I try to intentionally make ugly or bland fodder to save space
I have my hatchery with over 100 pairs at this point that I regularly breed and I mostly care about predictable outcomes.
I have lots of breeding projects for my hatchery were I try to get specific colors.
I have fodder breeder where I like the parents but most of the kids will be garbage and sometimes I will just slap two dragons together to create chaos or perfection. I will even cross hatchery with fodder dragons for fun.
The only dragons I don't breed are those intended to sell or my ungened G1s cause then I might still wanna sell them.
For me games like this are pet breeding games so that's what I do!

usually i just put random dragons in a nest to see what comes out. i have a few dragons that specifically breed with each other, but other than that i dont plan anything
i tend to rent my nests out to people on the nest network since i dont always use them all+ i like helping people complete projects n stuff :-)
