I'm curious about the dragons offered in Roundsey raffles. I often see people fawning over them but they're rarely my taste, and it got me thinking that it's so subjective what makes a cool dragon - how do they decide which ones to raffle out? Are there staff somewhere doing rigorous research into which genes and color combos would net the most raffle entrants? Or are they randomly generated?
And most importantly, if you had the power/pressure to design the raffle dragons, what colors and genes would you pick for them?

i think they're randomly generated. mostly, i think that people like roundsey dragons because
-theyre fully gened g1s
-it's an astronomically low chance to win one
-theres a special tag indicating that yes, this is a roundsey dragon and not just an egg
also i would make a triple cantaloupe aether. beloved. here's one of the possible scries for it
triple canta aeth

they're not randomly generated actually, they're designed by staff
and there was an issue some time ago where the dragons came out looking really ugly and there were suspicions about the person designing the dragons to be colorblind lol, bc if you put them through colorblind filthers they made a lot more sense

They're designed, they're not completely random. They all fit certain archetypes - we got a lot of triples and doubles, which are generally loved. When a new breed comes out, they make a lot of dragons to showcase the new genes and breed
Sometimes, there are jokes, like the Pumpkin/Cinnamon/Latte one.
Staff knows that most of the time, 90% of what the dragon was originally is going to be changed. So they focus on what cannot be changed as easily, meaning color combos and element synergy.

i think staff are aware of what stuff is popular. they DO tend to pick, if not doubles, then colors with good synergy, because these have the broadest appeal among the players!
sometimes that synergy hinges heavily on the accent color of a single gene tho, meaning that dragon was created specifically with that gene combo in mind. the current example, copper / navy / tan, is actually very hard to make match properly outside one or two other gene combinations.

Aww that makes me sad [emoji=coatl sad size=1], feel bad for that staff member ;A; I bet they were quite cool from a different perspective. I'd love to know what those prizes looked like.
As for dragons not being your taste- don't worry. The original dragon typically is not everyone's favorite, and winners change stuff up with them allll the time. I'd say it's very rare that I'm like "omg everything about that dragon is perfect".

Sometimes, like a week ago, they reflect recent site activity. For example, last week’s dragons were all Everlux to celebrate the new release, or the three triple Chorus/Choir when the gene set dropped.
They also seem to have a lot of accent colors, from what I’ve observed.
I think this Amethyst/Amethyst/Bubblegum Arcane Primal looks nice.

gonna make a new sig again hold onto your pants
Echoing what has been said above - we often get 'showoff' dragons for recent site additions like genes or breeds.
I think most of 'em look great, but the big draw is definitely that they're G1s which is realistically the only way a lot of people will ever get their hands on a G1 triple. I brought home the xxx Radioactive last week and can pretty confidently say there'll likely never be another like her in my lair because egg RNG is astronomical for them.
If I were going to design a dragon? I'd probably go with a triple Robin Coatl.

my personal favorites of the Roundsey dragons are strangely-matchy or just Super Cool XYZs! Which, I know is usually less common since they typically go for doubles or triples. If I were at the wheel, some dragons I might make would look like:
