not all "guests" in the list are actually true guests. people who have their profile set to invisible don't show up in the online user list and instead are counted as a "guest" in terms of who's online. i have my profile set to invisible, so i count as one of those "guests" even though i'm online and active. there's a pretty good chunk of the playerbase that's just invisible for various reasons
there is undoubtedly more guests than past years (in terms of ratio, not generally bc both of those numbers have gone up), and i feel like it might be bots? for what reason would 5k people consistently have to...do nothing? look at dragons and nothing else?
Something that the occasional desperate company will do is buy adspace somewhere, then have as many instances of that ad location open as they can without burning down their computer center. It qualifies as an ad view and having a lot of those looks better to potential investors.

normally i'd be in the camp of defending high numbers as actual users just set to invisible but i doesn't seem like higher traffic is corelating to any uptick in popularity of the site. take this with a grain of salt obviously we'll never know why the user count keeps creeping so high unless staff tells us but i don't think we can rule out bots any longer, i'd imagine its mostly crawlers which are around for archiving data (might explain lag some users get since they are known to create traffic issues?). i spent a small amount of time on chickensmoothie but no matter where i was in the forums there was always a handful of bots permanently browsing. this is kind of just a lived reality of the internet nowadays, i can guarantee unless your account is like a week old your page is archived at least once on the wayback machine.
