I've never been very social and I'm more comfortable lurking most of the time, so I don't really use social media that much. I've found I'm much more comfortable on forums! (even if I dont participate that much in them either way)

Ages ago I had a facebook account, but I used it exclusively to play games. Nowadays my only account in social media is tumblr, where I mostly use my fandom side blog to reblog art and occasionally compliment the artist if I have the energy for that.

however, this year I had wanted to try the old art of websurfing to get to know more sites! for that I made a neocities which is still the most basic of things because Im still learning html.
ehh though neocities doesnt count as social media
though I've heard of a few ones, such as cohost, but I cannot say much about it since I havent actually explored it. there's also pillowfort, used to be paid but now its not.
but what you say about mastodon gives me the impression you might want something more popular? which I dont think these are, but theres the option if you wanna something outside the most well-known ones.

I will always recommend tumblr simply because there is no algorithm, that alone makes it superior to most other social media to me. If you don't like something you're seeing, unfollow that person or block that tag, and it's pretty much gone.

Yeah, it does make it a little harder to interact there, because you kind of have to manually find content you like. But if you have friends who use tumblr, you can start by following them, and when they reblog posts you think are funny or insightful or art you think is good or whatever you're looking for, then go and follow those users they reblogged from, and increase your followers that way.

Tbh I really like how the lack of algorithm and slightly clunky old-style interface makes it less instant than other sites, feels more like the older internet where you had to actually look around a little bit to find things and there's a bit more "distance" between you and other users. It discourages the time wasting infinite scrolling that instagram and twitter's explore/for you pages encourage. I like the less in-your-face nature of the interactions with other people. It just feels more lowkey and relaxed than twitter does.

There's also a sizeable flight rising fan community on tumblr!

I use tumblr... twitter was getting way too stressful for me for a multitude of reasons and I like having a tumblr where I can kinda just do my own thing without worrying too much about other people I guess.

TBH I've also started using facebook. I don't really have many people added save for a select few people, obviously from IRL since that's facebook's thing, and my feed is almost purely dog stuff. Like barely anything else, so I use it for de-stressing with cute animals since the algorithm actually shows me what I want. Even tumblr's algorithm stresses me out sometimes, especially with how its filters work... like no I don't want to even have the option to see what I have blocked ahh. But yeah I might also make an instagram account for the same stuff, the only reason I started using facebook was to reach out to some dog people...

If you want something similar to Twitter, maybe try Bluesky? iirc one of the founders of Twitter helped make it. The main bad thing I can think of is that there's a one-image limit per post, so I don't know if they've changed that or not.

There's also Tumblr being a cockroach that won't die, but obviously that also has its issues already touched on earlier in this thread.
I suggest bluesky honestly. I'm making some great friends over there and while it has its problems like they all do generally it's improving and has great tools for keeping yourself safe and moderating what content you do and do not want to see.
@SpiritMessenger that's really nice to hear and I think that's going to be my push to make one, tysm! I've missed the app i could scroll through whenever i felt like it and got cute updates.

Heck yeah! From a code standpoint it runs a lot like twitter so it's familiar to use, but there isn't really an algorithm like twitter has. Your posts can show up in feeds if you use certain words [ie the FFXIV feed will catch the game's name, common character/race names, etc] but beyond that it's just friendly chats and conversations for the most part. Also blocking is great because it deletes it on both sides so the other person can't go back and 'reveal' blocked messages and it's like y'all never interacted to begin with which is super nice.

If you (or really anyone else here) has questions on how it works feel free to hit me up, I've been on the platform for like a year? now and I've got most of it down pat ^^

Pings Welcome! Especially if you're quoting me XD
I use Instagram solely because all my friends use it and I can talk to them on there - however, you either need to only follow people you already know outside of it (ex. maybe artists you know on Twitter that also have Instagram) or abuse the hell out of the block and 'not interested' features, because it truly is a cesspit.

Honestly if I didn't have friends that prefer to chat over social media, I wouldn't use it at all (and even at this point I'm considering deleting anyway lol)

I'm also here to suggest Bluesky. It's basically Twitter before it was ruined by Elon Musk.
@FireDragonFlare It was insane how I was getting pushed porn and shock value content before I left Twitter. I liked going through the regular feed because I would find interesting people to follow but it was like a mine field. Definitely have to only look at your followed people to avoid anything jarring.
