TOPIC | Aberration Gene Error Thread
This thread is to track any gene errors that occur with the Aberration breed. This thread is for this breed only.

Many genes have accommodations for dragon anatomy where one breed is every so slightly different than others because it worked better for them. These are not considered errors.

Please report any errors you encounter and we will do our best to correct them in a timely manner.

Note that it may take a short while for the site's internal image cache to reflect the corrected image assets.

Corrected Issues
• Primary: Falcon on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Primary: Ground on Aberration M & F had some feather markings near the shoulder cleaned up that would create a bleed effect when layered with a secondary.
• Primary: Orb on Aberration F had the outline color on the right head's right eyebrow added where it was missing on one of the markings.
• Primary: Savannah on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Primary: Slime on Aberration H has the slime marking bleed into the tongue on the right head.
• Primary: Speckle on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Primary: Starmap on Aberration M has an incorrect output setting corrected on its swirls.
• Primary: Swirl on all Aberration had the outer edge color corrected so it would be visible on all colors. The center color had its opacity changed to match the modern counterpart.
• Primary: Vipera on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Secondary: Bee on Aberration M was missing a highlight on the top of the wing. Fixed.
• Secondary: Constellation on Aberration M has an incorrect output setting corrected on its swirls.
• Secondary: Eel on Aberration H had the stripe on the left wing edge corrected to be the same as the right wing.
• Secondary: Eel on all Aberration had a halo of pixel bleed corrected near the individual feathers on the shoulder.
• Secondary: Flair on Aberration F had some patterns that were bleeding into the cut-out holes in the wing by a few pixels cleaned up.
• Secondary: Freckle on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Secondary: Hypnotic on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Secondary: Marbled on all Aberration had the outer edge color corrected so it would be visible on all colors. The center color had its opacity changed to match the modern counterpart.
• Secondary: Peregrine on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Secondary: Safari on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Secondary: Striation on Aberration F & M had a halo of pixel bleed corrected near the individual feathers on the shoulder.
• Secondary: Weaver on all Aberration had a halo of pixel bleed in the interior spot color corrected.
• Secondary: Weaver on Aberration M had a solid layer added to it after the correction by mistake. This has been removed.
• Tertiary: Carnivore on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Tertiary: Fangs on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.
• Tertiary: Fans on Aberration H & M had the areas of fan overlap better show the transparency within itself and not just against the base colors of the dragon.
• Tertiary: Firebreather on Aberration F has a layer that wasn't being dynamically colored corrected.
• Tertiary: Glowtail on all Aberration F was missing the glow where the glowtail overlaps the wings. This has been corrected. This is not an issue on H & M because the glowtail does not overlap with glow being on top - it is always on the bottom.
• Tertiary: Koi on all Aberration bled into the mouth/teeth/claws. This has been corrected.
• Tertiary: Koi on all Aberration had the pixel bleed of the shadow corrected.
• Tertiary: Kumo on Aberration F had some markings touched up so they would butt up perfectly againt the wing edges rather than falling one pixel short in places.
• Tertiary: Kumo on Aberration H had the marking that bled over three of the teeth corrected.
• Tertiary: Polkadot on Aberration F had dots added to the lower leg on the left side, under the tail. F & H had any dots that bled outside their areas by a few pixels corrected.
• Tertiary Riot on Aberration H had the riot fan mutation protruding out in front of the overlapped wing. This has been corrected.
• Tertiary: Skeletal on all Aberration had the discoloration/spot layer set to the correct opacity to match the Banescale version.
• Tertiary: Spines on Aberration F had a spine that clipped into the mane corrected.
• Tertiary: Veined on all Aberration had their colors corrected from THE GREAT MISCLICK.

Known Issues

Investigating (Not sure if issue or not)
• Tertiary: Glimmer has an anti-aliased edge so as to appear smooth. When it is a dark color layered over a lighter primary or horn or belly marking, it the layer behind it "bleeds" through the edges of this gene. This is not technically an error of the gene itself, which in isolation and against most colors is perfectly fine. This might be solved by extending the horn and belly marking beyond their usual bounds by a few more pixels, which would effectively change the genes coverage. Will have to see how this conflicts with line art and how it looks in practice.

Working as intended
• Some genes do not have the belly color that is used for basic genes. This is by intent, but should be consistent within itself and with modern counterparts (if present)
• Some genes do not use the horn colors consistent with basic genes. This is by intent, but should be consistent within itself and with modern counterparts (if present)
• The mane color being slightly different than the wing color in many genes is intentional and happens in many dragon breeds with a mane.
• Aberrations have a fade that happens from the secondary to the primary gene along the wing arm. If there are two patterns they will overlap during this fade and this is considered working as intended, as removing either pattern would leave a blank space or create a harsh transition.
• Multi-Gaze will clip with line-breaking tertiaries. This is not a bug that can be corrected through art. It's a limitation of our layering system.
• Primary: Diamond's black color not having a horn fade is semi-intentional. The color used on the face is the same used throughout the body, and on the color black we wanted a nice light color to pair well with black's light belly. This made it very close in tone to the horn color, resulting in the low-contrast horn fade.
• Primary: Diamond having the third color be present at the base of one tail and the tip of the other is intentional and consistent across the breed.
• Primary: Lionfish having a bright accent color on the tail is intended and consistent with the modern version of the gene.
• Secondary: Hex is utilizing the intended color for the mane. This is consistent with the colors used in Veilspun, which were also intentional.
• Secondary: Seraph on Aberration F has markings in the lower feathers that are intended, as they create a complete spiral shape when paired with Cherub, and a feather detailing alone. Males do not have this as their spiral shape was offset slightly. This is considered working as intended and is an acceptable pose-to-pose difference.
• Primary: Flaunt on Aberration F has different facial markings from one head to another. We talked about it and agreed that we like the facial markings and do not consider this an error, but a pose-to-pose difference.
• Tertiary: Stained not covering the eyes or teeth is considered working as intended and is consistent with the modern version of the gene.
• Secondary: Toxin on Aberration having smaller markings on the mane is considered working as intended and is an acceptable pose-to-pose difference.
• Tertiary Flecks on Aberration having small flecks on the mane is intended and is considered breed-to-breed accommodation. The rendering of flecks is not considered an error.
• Mane tufts on the shoulders of adult aberrations are not intended to have line art by design and this is considered working as intended. (the pixel halos around the edge of these line-less spots that are being addressed in the list of errors, however, are NOT intended.)
• Nail Color on ancient breeds and half of moderns coincides with the horn color. Some modern breeds have dark grey nails across the board. Since launch, nail color has not been consistent breed-to-breed. All ancients and breeds going forward have the nails colored to match the horns as default for future consistency, but we are not going to change the breeds that have the grey nails as these have been around since launch and/or breed inception.

The horn color or grey nail color is used as default when the gene itself does not have a special nail color associated with it as part of that gene's design, much like belly color has a default that's used across many genes unless the gene says otherwise.

1. Primary Pattern Halo: (F & M, pattern dependent) Gene pairs are drawn seamlessly. So if there's a pattern that has spots that go just where the mane is, the primary has those spots in the same area. We take the seamless template and split it in two to make the primary and secondary. This means that on some patterns we're overlaying the secondary on top of existing spots. This works great in theory, but because our lines are anti-aliased, the secondary's edges will not have fully opaque pixels. So they cannot fully cover what's below it without looking jagged. If what was below it was smooth and not having some kind of contrasting pattern exactly lining the place where the mane would go, there would be no halo. There's no halo in most areas because the line art is enough to cover up that overlap. On the two adult templates, there's little mane chunks that don't have any line art, so the halo is visible on the anti-aliased edges when you have two images trying to cover the exact same pixels with a contrasting pattern. All primary templates with patterns need to be double checked to make sure that they don't have exact mane-shapes in a contrasting color happening right along the seam, creating a halo. They should be colored in to what's directly next to it to avoid a halo effect. 2. Primary Seam: (F, all primaries independent of pattern) The primaries on the female pose have the little lineless-mane tufts cut out, completely missing and transparent. I normally like to build in a minimum of a 2 pixel overlap between the primary and secondary, so that when the secondary lays over the primary there's no semi-transparent seam. I didn't do that with the female pose template, and a seam is visible, even on genes without a pattern. 3. Secondary Pattern Halo I made corrections for some of the secondaries a few months back. Some secondaries do appear to have patterns that touch just to the edge of the mane, which can ALSO create a pixel halo of color. [s]There will probably be a few of these to fix up after I get the primaries sorted out.[/s] Update: There is a minor seam within the wings of most aberrations. This has gone unreported because not visible unless you zoom in in an art program and overlay it against a high contrast background, but since I'm combing through the secondaries anyway, I may as well address this at the same time. As a result, every secondary will be resaved and uploaded. This should not affect the look of the genes in a notable way. Note on "changing every primary": [i]For anyone worried about this changing the look of their dragons - it won't. Unless you like a little half pixel halo around each tuft, the end result will be the same patterns you're already using, just with no seam or halo! It sounds drastic to say "every primary is going to be changed", but it's not in a way that's going to really change how your dragon looks. This is not a pattern or color alteration! TLDR: There's issues with the primary templates and a seam that results from anti-aliased edges meeting together exactly with no overlap and not creating full coverage. This problem can be corrected, but I am going to break this particular issue out into its own subsection so I have a way track it so I don't miss anything.

What Happen? - For the art and image enthusiasts who enjoy reading about the nitty-gritty of the pixels!

Well, it's three issues, which is why it took so long to figure out exactly what's hppening.

There will probably be a few of these to fix up after I get the primaries sorted out. Update: There is a minor seam within the wings of most aberrations.
