Hey guys! My school has decided to not be conservative and christian this year *yay* and the library are looking for books to lgbt positive books and novels to stock up on for June!
Just wondering if anybody has good book recs (that are available in Australia) and ideal for age groups from 12-15 and also 16-18 that would be great thanks!

Sarah Waters’ books feature sapphic characters and couples

I’d like to recommend “Fingersmith” in particular

The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar would be great for the 12 - 15 age range.

Also Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, Simon vs. the HomoSapiens Agenda & Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli, The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness, and Carry On by Rainbow Rowell for 16 - 18.

I haven't read it but The Boy From The Mish is apparently a really great Australian LGBT+ YA written by an Aboriginal author.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
Anything by Sarah Gailey; they're all pretty short and very queer.
The Tea Dragon comics by Kay O'Neill
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Someone already mentioned Carry On but I'll second it!
And I don't know how accessible it is, but my personal favorite queer novel: Timekeeper by Tara Sim. Very underrated book that deserves more attention <3

The Nightrunner Series by Lynn Flewelling! The genre is fantasy adventure, and the two main characters (men) fall in love with each other halfway through the series.

It's a great choice for the 12-15 range.

OH MAN OKAY (hi i'm a (queer) librarian myself so I have a LOT RECS)

For the 12-15 crowd:
  • The Better Nate than Ever series by Tim Federle is really popular
  • Star Crossed by Barbara Dee
  • Melissa by Alex Gino
  • Beetle and The Hollow Bones by Aliza Layne (graphic novel)
  • Snapdragon by Kate Leyh (graphic novel)
  • Artie and the Wolf Moon by Oliva Stephens (graphic novel)
  • The Deep and Dark Blue by Niki Smith (graphic novel)
  • Ashley Herring Blake has multiple queer books for this age range!

For the 16-18 range:
  • Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore (They actually have a TON of queer YA, mostly magical realism and I haven't read many of them but I LOVED this one, it's "what if the great gatsby but Nick and Gatsby are both trans boys")
  • Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
  • Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova
  • When The Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb
  • Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao (EXTREMELY GOOD!! Actual love triangle between the three main characters and not just two lines going from the girl to the boys.)
  • Multiple books by F.T Lukens but my favorite is In Deeper Waters

okay that's probably enough. that being said, if your librarians at your school aren't aware, this is a fantastic resource for LGBTQ+ books, it has SO many lists.

(also I'm +1ing Timekeeper, Henna Wars, Cemetery Boys, Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me, and frankly EVERY Kay O'Neill book, I also really enjoyed Aquicorn Cove)

Here are some of my suggestions:
  • Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinton
  • Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan
  • Hell Followed with Us by Andrew Joseph White
  • Geography Club by Bret Hartinger
  • Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden

I'll also +1 Heartstopper, Aristotle and Dante, and House in the Cerulean Sea.
