Cursed Leviathan
A Seaside Caverns Lore Project

Hello and Welcome! to my lore project thread, Cursed Leviathan. It's a legacy breeding project idea I have combined with, what I hope to be, a very interesting story. Though various parts of the story have already been determined, what happens will still be dependent on how everything unfolds.

This story is told from the perspective of my progen, Nami. It's written as though everything has already happened, even though it's technically still happening.

New chapters will be added as events unfold (new clutch, new event, etc). If you'd like to be added to a new chapter update pinglist, let me know!

The sky clear, the waters calm, the breeze nice and warm. My essence floated aimlessly along the waves as they softly crashed into a tide pool on the rocky shores, fusing itself into the sand at the bottom. I remember stretching out a claw from beneath those waters. My first moment of life given to me by the sea. My scales forming from the shells, molding themselves into my form. It was clear from the beginning. I had a purpose. I was to create a clan within this place near the sea. A new home for those who sought it out. My charge was to protect this home. So there I stayed, slowly carving out a cavern within the walls of the nearby cliff side. Close enough to where the boon of the sea would be easily accessible, but far enough to remain safe from any dangers that could lurk below the shallows. Soon others would join me here. We would decorate our cavern walls with shells and stones we'd find around the beaches. Our bellies were never hungry, the sea gave us plenty of food. Life was, and still is very good in our home in the cliff. - - - - - Time passed slowly. I remember sitting quietly out upon my rock near the sea. Looking out at the waters always calmed me. My thoughts seemed as violently chaotic as a storm. I had built a home, a family out of this beautiful seaside cliff. I was doing as I believed my calling had told me. And yet.. I felt empty. Something was still missing. Mizuko, one of the first to arrive at the cliff, had approached me in the earlier days. He offered me his life in exchange for my love. I didn't answer right then, and the thought of it all still troubled me. He was a strong as he was beautiful. Kind as he was brilliant. He'd make a perfect consort. But was it truly what I wanted? The thought of bearing a clutch worried me. But then, it didn't at the same time. It was confusing. In time I'd come to accept Mizuko as my consort. Time passed, and a clutch was born into the world. Three beautiful shell encrusted eggs lie peacefully in our cave's nursery. The time had come for heirs to be brought into the realm, and I wanted to make sure they were well taken care of. Mizuko, in his calm nature, constantly reminded me that all would be well. We had the clan to help look after them, after all. And while it was true, I couldn't help but think something, somewhere in the distant future was going to go horribly wrong. Chapter One

A new beginning

Her claws were itching for a hunt, and to be honest, so were mine. We dove silently beneath the waters, snatching fish and shoving them into our bags. It felt so good to stretch my body after lying near a nest for days. The two of us must have been out there for hours to restock the clans seafood stores. When we finally decided to rest, we found a small cove off to one side under the nearby reef. Both of us thought it was odd we had never noticed it before. Miku, being the explorer she is insisted we check it out. I begrudgingly obliged, shifting my bag on my shoulder before following her. In the back of the cove we found what appeared to be a makeshift home. A run down table was on the side wall with various small trinkets and bottles spread out upon it. A bed of of soft kelp lay haphazardly thrown together in the back. But what caught Miku's eye, however, was a pristine chest tucked snugly away in a shelf dug out of the wall. She beckoned me over, pointing it out, stating that we should open it. I sighed. For all the willpower in the world, curiosity was stronger. I reached out, taking the chest from it's nook, carefully running a claw over the top of it before opening it. Inside the chest was nothing special, really, or at least to us. Some old notes that were written in tongues we didn't understand, it certainly wasn't Draconic, a few more random trinkets that didn't look much different than those on the table, mostly just junk. But underneath all that there was a intricately carved stone pendant. It looked to be a precious stone, perhaps lapis, very blue in color and absolutely beautiful. Miku suggested we take it, after all, any dragon who left things alone like this was just asking for it to be taken, right? I carefully placed the necklace in my bag, and put the chest back in it's place. Just as we turned around the owner of the small hovel made her presence known. She had been sitting there watching us for quite some time, silently. A rather decrepit looking Pearlcatcher, she appeared frail, her scales worn by time, eyes glazed to the point she looked blind. The old one grinned. She called out to me, asking why I took her precious pendant. I don't remember what I responded, but I decided to hand it back to her, we had been caught and it didn't seem right to fight this old dragon over such a small trinket. However, the old one waved it off and told me to keep it. The curse was mine now. I stepped back, confused. Curse? What curse? What was this crazy old hag speaking of? The Pearlcatcher just grinned before pointing at the way out for us to leave. I tried throwing the pendant at her, but no matter what I did it refused to leave my claws. Defeated and confused, we began the journey home. - - - - - The day had come. My precious eggs were due to hatch any moment now. Mizuko and I sat near it all day. The rest of the clan doted on us constantly, bringing us food and gifts while we waited. It was to be celebrated! The first nest of our clan, our first batch of hatchlings. And they were mine. I couldn't be more excited. It seemed like the day was dragging on in my mind, but it was still only mid morning when the first tiny cracking sound was heard. Everyone who was in the nesting grounds at the time gathered around to see the first tiny hatchling, a guardian like myself, poke his head out of his egg. His scales a bright blue like the sea on a sunny day. Everything was going well, the younglings were already walking, albeit a bit wobbly, they were eating well, everything was perfect. Or at least I thought it was. About a week into life, all three children began to show signs of sickness. We brought in a medic from another clan as we didn't have a resident one ourselves. Despite his best efforts, though, he couldn't diagnose or heal their illness. Until now I had completely forgotten the run in with the old hag under the waters. I'd been wearing the pendant since the encounter, it wouldn't leave my grasp no matter what we did, though. Miku approached me as I sit quietly watching over my hatchlings, reminding me of what the old hag had said. The curse. It had to be it. I sent Miku and two others to go after the Pearlcatcher and bring her back to me, but she was no where to be found. I felt lost. My hatchlings were suffering because of some trinket. And worse, we didn't even know what the curse actually was. Every visiting medic told us the same thing, they could not diagnose it, they could not heal it. One, however, suggested calling in a witch doctor from the Shadow territory. They could at least tell us what the curse was. Mizuko himself went to find someone. It was a week before he returned, a Skydancer in tow. The Skydancer had barely made it into the grounds before he recoiled back and refused to go in further. He wouldn't even speak unless I was no where near, stating the necklace was incredibly cursed. He spoke of a dragon ages old who could not bear hatchlings of her own, she poured her grief into a pendant her mate had given her, cursing any that would wear it to carry the same pain as she. Over time the curse had worn down, it had been rumored that occasionally hatchlings survived the curse now, but it seemed to effect everyone in the bloodline of the one who wore it. From what I could make of the Skydancer's nervous rambling, only one of my children would survive. And they would be cursed with this burden as well.
