And it’s true. Much as he’d like to believe otherwise, an affair with a dragon of royal descent and a mere servant really did end in his birth. His ‘father’ compensated the servant of course, handing her enough money to leave the clan and survive (but just barely) and asking for her to keep the affair a secret.
We can’t all have our happy endings, you know.
His mother kept the truth from him for as long as she could, telling him that he was an orphan, and had been abandoned. It was such a convincing lie—the both of them wanted so much to believe it, you see—that he was fooled for a while. It wasn’t pretty when he finally discovered the truth.
When his mother entered the employ of another clan, he quickly learnt from his lowly position that power mattered, that emotion was the one of the most common weaknesses of the nobility, and that as long as you were willing to do it, anyone could be played.
And he had a way with words.
He learned to cheat and lie and manipulate from a very young age. It was easy, really. Everyone hid their own faults behind a facade, believing in their lies and deceitful tongues. He watched, and he observed, and he picked out weaknesses like a crow plucking eyes from a dead corpse. Everyone had a weakness, and in a way, the ballroom was no different from a wasteland.
Everyone needs to survive, after all.
Eventually, he wormed his way into the hearts of the nobility, dressing up for formal events with treasure he did not have. It took a while, admittedly, but the results were enough to keep him going. He just kept winning and breaking hearts as he saw fit. There was always one more prize, one more dragon to win over. It didn't matter that the trail of broken hearts and shattered minds that he left behind grew longer by the month.
You know what they say about dragons like him.
