It's no problem at all! I was pretty bad off when I started because I didn't even use Baldwin til two months after joining XD
When referring to Baldwin mats or materials, people usually do mean the goos, oozes, sludges, mucks, and slimes you get from reducing an item.
This guide is pretty basic but gives a rundown of what certain items give you what. (Though keep in mind the color you get is completely randomized, and certain items won't guarantee a certain color of goo, sludge, etc. I thought that was the case at first.. haha..)

thanks for clarifying that for me, it's confusing since there's a few different things called 'materials' involved in Baldwin. i joined in december and i've really just been breeding, only decided to start with Baldwin last night and i haven't even gone near the coliseum. i'll keep melting your food into goo, and then i can either do more items you send or if you need ooze i have plenty of stuff to make that from.
