I've looked around and there doesn't seem to be a thread about it, nor is this in the FAQs (to my knowledge)

If I use a gene scroll on one my of starter dragons (eg. shimmer on a mirror) and later decide to make my mirror dragon a spiral, will the gene still be present or will I have to use another scroll?
