Are we allowed to alter the shading a bit as long as the old shading is on top as a multiply? I got that impression from the guide but I want to make certain.
And can the shading be modified more heavily than this? It isn't done.

While I'm no expert, I'd say yes - adding shading/texture is okay for custom skins, so long as the original shading is still obviously there.
