Chapter 1
As the sun peeks over the horizon, young Jemmy steps out of the truck, into the soft grass outside her new home in Littleroot Town. Her father, Norman, became the gym leader of Petalburg City, and wherever he goes, so does his family. Now, Jemmy always looked up to her father–she always hoped that one day, she would get her own Pokemon. Little did she know, that moment would be imminent.

She goes to meet her new neighbors, the Birch family. With them is a boy her age named Brendan. His dad works as a Pokemon Professor, and he’s out in the field a lot, collecting data. Jemmy goes with Brendan out to Route 101, where they come across the professor himself, being cornered by a wild Poochyena. At Professor Birch’s command, Jemmy grabs a random Pokemon out of his bag and tosses it out, revealing a Torchic.

After the Torchic swiftly takes care of the Poochyena, Professor Birch gives Jemmy it as a thank-you gift. Overjoyed, Jemmy immediately sets out towards the north, only to run into Brendan. They decide to battle in front of a small pond on Route 103. Though Brendan’s Mudkip is strong, he’s no match for Torchic. I actually wiped on the first attempt, but since I didn’t have Pokeballs yet, it doesn’t count.

They head back to the lab, where Jemmy receives a Pokedex. Though Professor Birch wishes for her to help complete it, Jemmy isn’t too keen on catching every Pokemon she sees. She wants to be the strongest there ever was! So, after Brendan gives her some Pokeballs, she catches a Poochyena off of Route 101 and takes a rest in Oldale Town.

But as she exits the Pokemon Center…she realizes that she’s no longer carrying a Torchic and a Poochyena. That’s right–with the power of Pokemon Bank, we can get our first few Pokemon for the challenge before getting access to trading.

In Torchic’s place is a Venipede, who she names Bloodstone, and in Poochyena’s place is a Togepi, who she names Opal. The only issue is…Opal doesn’t have an attacking move. Sure, he has Metronome, but that is such an unpredictable move that maybe it’s best not to use it. At least he has Serene Grace and not Hustle!

Thankfully, Bloodstone is not the only attacker on the team, as on Route 103, Jemmy catches a Zigzagoon who becomes a Dunsparce named Labradorite. Unfortunately for Labradorite, though, her ability is Run Away. Which isn’t very useful. But the one thing they have in common? They both know Rollout. With their combined power, they plow through the trainers on Route 102 with a single move.

What Pokemon does Jemmy catch on Route 102? Why, it’s a Seedot! But that Seedot quickly turns into a Clauncher named Turquoise. Jemmy is surprised to discover he knows Crabhammer, which he normally doesn’t know until level 30…but he can learn it as an egg move! Turquoise will certainly prove to be a valuable asset on her quest to become the strongest, Jemmy thinks.

Past Route 102 is Petalburg City, where Jemmy meets up with her dad. Norman is delighted to see Jemmy with her own Pokemon, but their reunion is cut short when a sickly boy walks into the gym, asking if Norman could help him catch a Pokemon. He introduces himself as Wally, and Norman accepts his offer, giving him a single Pokeball and having Jemmy accompany him to Route 102. After Wally catches a Ralts, they return to the gym, where Wally thanks the father-daughter duo and gives Jemmy the PlayNav to add to her PokeNav Plus. It’s after that where everyone parts ways, Norman promising to battle Jemmy once she gets stronger.

The most important feature of the PlayNav is the ability to trade. With this, Jemmy can receive eggs at any time, which quickly proves true after she catches a Wurmple off of Route 104. One moment, she’s holding a Pokeball, and the next, she finds herself holding a Gulpin egg. Eventually, the egg hatches, and she names the Pokemon inside Chalcedony. Chalcedony comes with the move Yawn, allowing her to put to sleep any Pokemon of her choosing. If Jemmy wants to become the strongest, she’ll have to use status moves to her advantage.

The moment she steps into Petalburg Woods, she catches another Wurmple that turns into another egg. She doesn’t hatch it immediately, but when it does, she names the Wooper inside Kyanite. Back to Petalburg Woods, Jemmy makes her way through the labyrinth and encounters a scientist from the Devon Corporation. He barely gets a word in when a guy in a strange red outfit pops out of the tall grass, demanding him to hand over his papers.

At his cries for help, Jemmy steps in to fight the strange man, who declared himself to be a grunt of Team Magma. Whatever that might be. He only had a Poochyena, so, you guessed it, Labradorite takes it out with Rollout. The grunt flees, and as thanks, the scientist gives Jemmy an Exp. Share. She throws it out the moment he leaves.

After gathering some berries and fighting her way through a few more trainers, Jemmy arrives in Rustboro City, home of the Rustboro Gym. And it was huge! There were so many places she could go! But of course, she naturally gravitated towards the gym. Though, she soon ran into a problem–over half of her Pokemon were disobeying her orders. She needed her Pokemon to listen to her, or else, she would fail the gym challenge.

So, she heads out to Route 116 to the east and catches a Skitty. The egg that appears in its place hatches into a Sandshrew named Citrine. With a Water-type and a Ground-type, the odds of beating the Rustboro Gym became much higher. After training her Pokemon up and giving them all Oran Berries, she steps foot into the gym, her chin held up high.

Roxanne, the gym leader, uses Rock-type Pokemon. Rock-type Pokemon have a lot of weaknesses–Jemmy studied type matchups when she was younger, all in preparation of her becoming a trainer. Now, her efforts finally pay off. She breezes through the gym trainers and arrives at the very back of the building, where Roxanne awaits.

Roxanne sends out her Geodude, while Jemmy sends out Kyanite. Geodude throws out a Rock Tomb, but Kyanite takes it all with a smile on her face. Not even breaking a sweat, she fires a few Water Guns, and Geodude is taken down. Roxanne sends out her other Pokemon, Nosepass, next. Jemmy tries having Kyanite use Water Gun again, but the attack was much weaker than she expected. So, she tries using Mud Shot instead. The first one Kyanite fires off lands a critical hit on Nosepass, allowing her to take it out with the very next Mud Shot. All without even eating her Oran Berry.

With such an easy victory, Jemmy proudly takes the Stone Badge off of Roxanne. One down, seven to go! But unbeknownst to her, her trials were only beginning.

I really love the format/storytelling you’ve got going on, it’s very entertaining to read! Thank goodness for the exp share or else Opal would have had a very short life. A very interesting team so far, I wonder how they’ll fair against the next gym?

Thank you! The format was inspired by some old threads on a now-defunct forum back in 2014/2015, where they told a story along with their nuzlockes. I rarely see those kinds of nuzlocke retellings anymore, so I might as well carry the torch here.

It's time for another update!

Chapter 2
Humming a short tune, Jemmy takes a stroll around Rustboro City after healing her Pokemon up, wondering which gym she should take on next. Soon enough, though, she comes across the Devon scientist she helped in Petalburg Woods, where she learns the Devon Parts he had been carrying had been stolen–by none other than that Team Magma Grunt she fought in the woods! Her mom would tell her to help those who need it, and this man definitely needs it! So, she agrees to find the parts and runs into Route 116.

After fighting a slew of trainers that Labradorite, Turquoise, and Kyanite take care of, she eventually arrives in front of a tunnel, where she sees the sobbing form of an elderly man, muttering a name over and over again underneath gasping breaths. Jemmy tries to help him, but he simply explains that his beloved Peeko had been stolen by “an odd thug.” She suspects it’s the same person who stole the Devon Parts, but nonetheless, she promises to help him, too.

She slips inside Rusturf Tunnel, where the first thing she does is catch a Whismur. When she fetches it out of the PC later, she discovers an egg housing a Phantump inside, which she names PetrifydWood (Petrified Wood). Obviously, she doesn’t run back to the Pokemon Center Immediately, instead heading deep inside Rusturf Tunnel, following the distressed cries of a Wingull. In the darkness, she spots the form of a man with what appears to be horns, taunting her.

Eventually, she corners him, and all he can do is send out his Poochyena and command it to attack. Jemmy sends out Citrine to battle, and after two Fury Cutters, Poochyena falls. The grunt hands over the parts and flees, freeing the Wingull from his dastardly grasp. The old man from earlier rushes into the tunnel, calling Peeko’s name, and the Wingull leaps into his arms, chirping happily. He introduces himself as Mr. Briney and thanks her for saving Peeko before heading back to his cottage near Petalburg City.

Jemmy follows Mr. Briney out of Rusturf Tunnel and heads back to Rustboro City, where she meets up with the Devon scientist. She gives him the Devon Parts, and he takes her on an exclusive tour of the Devon Corporation HQ. She couldn’t help but be amazed by all the new technology being developed! The scientist seemed to take joy in her wonder, and by the time they reach the top floor, Jemmy learns that the president of Devon himself wants to thank her personally. What an honor!

Though Mr. Stone just seems like the average businessman, Jemmy revels in his praise anyways. And the fact that he wants her to deliver a letter, too? You have to be special to get that kind of treatment, and Jemmy might just be the definition of special. Nothing can stop her now!

…Except Brendan. They bump into each other as Jemmy runs out of the Devon HQ, quickly apologizing. Brendan immediately asks her about the Pokedex–which Jemmy has been very much not focusing on. She lies and tells him that it has been going along well. If Brendan knew she was lying, he didn’t say anything, as he simply went on his way after that. Jemmy let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding–that was close! What would he even say if he found out the truth? She hoped she didn’t have to find out that answer.

So, she meets up with Mr. Briney next, who happily lets her take his boat to Dewford. The waters of Hoenn were crystal clear as they glided across the waves, Peeko not too far behind as she spread her wings and flew towards the sky. Jemmy wished she had a camera on her, because this scene was just too beautiful to let it remain in her memory! …But she’ll see it again. How was she going to get back to the mainland, after all?

When they arrive in Dewford Town, Mr. Briney suggests challenging Gym Leader Brawly. If anyone knew where this “Steven” guy is, it would be him. Even in this tiny town, the gym’s roof remains bright yellow. Given the Dewford Gym was Fighting-type, though, Jemmy needs to prepare. And her options just got a whole lot bigger as a fisherman hands her an Old Rod. She tries out the fishing rod, successfully fishing up a Magikarp in front of said fisherman. She catches it, and when she fetches it out of the PC, she finds herself with a Mawile egg. When it hatches, she names the Pokemon inside Tiger’s Eye. She couldn’t help but find that giant mouth of his intimidating…

Walking around the beach some more, Jemmy catches another Magikarp, replaced by another egg that hatches into a Buizel named Amber. Thankfully, her streak of Water-type Pokemon ends as she catches a Makuhita inside Granite Cave nearby, replaced by an Audino named Rhodochrosit (Rhodochrosite). Still no sign of Steven, though. That’s fine; she was going to challenge the Dewford Gym anyways.

In the back of her mind, Jemmy’s situation seriously started to bug her. Why was every Pokemon she caught turning into an egg? And why did they hatch into something other than the Pokemon she caught? Maybe her dad knew the answer–he always knows something!

Taking a boat back to Petalburg City, she rushes into the gym and finds Norman in the backmost room, watching him deal the final blow on his latest challenger’s final Pokemon. The challenger runs out of the gym, crying, and it’s then that Norman finally notices his daughter. When she explains the situation, Norman doesn’t even believe her! So, carrying five Pokemon with her, she takes her dad to the pond in the corner of Petalburg City and catches a Magikarp. The moment the Pokeball flies into her hands, it transforms into an egg.

Norman, quite frankly, looked shocked. And Jemmy’s never seen him shocked. Perhaps for the first time in her life, her dad didn’t have an answer to the phenomenon. But, he promised to investigate. If he knows the answer, he’ll tell her the next time they meet. They say their goodbyes, and Jemmy heads back with Mr. Briney to Dewford Town.

The egg hatches into an Omanyte, and after getting over her surprise, she names him Lapis Lazuli. With her team assembled, Jemmy heads into the gym. It’s less straightforward than Roxanne’s gym, the puzzle forcing her to stumble around the dark for a little bit, but once she makes her way through, she comes face to face with Brawly. Taking on a fighting stance, he sends out his first Pokemon.

With a Machop on the battlefield, Jemmy sends out Tiger’s Eye. As a Steel-and-Fairy-type, he’s the perfect answer to Brawly’s Pokemon. A few Fairy Winds knock Machop out, while all Brawly does is command Machop to use Bulk Up and heal it when its HP is low. With Machop down, he sends out his final Pokemon, Makuhita. It knocks off Tiger’s Eye’s Oran Berry, but he doesn’t need it anyways, only having a few scratches on him as he knocks Makuhita out with Fairy Wind. With another easy victory, the Knuckle Badge is hers.

Brawly, thankfully, does know where Steven is at: Granite Cave. Jemmy races over there, finding that the passage once blocked by enthusiastic ruin hunters is clear. She steps inside to find a giant mural engraved in the cave’s face, depicting a monster rising above the land. Her eyes soon fall to the blue-haired man examining the mural and talking to himself. The moment Jemmy sees his suit, her eyes practically pop out of her head.

That’s Steven Stone. The Champion of the Hoenn Pokemon League. How did she not make the connection earlier?! She bit her tongue, forcing her enthusiasm down as she walked up to Steven rather stiffly. He introduces himself, and upon asking what brought her here, Jemmy pulls Mr. Stone’s letter out of her bag.

Even after thanking her, Steven doesn’t stop talking. Eventually, he prompts her with a question: what does she feel when she looks upon the mural? Jemmy finds herself unable to answer. She didn’t have to, as Steven gives a smile and relates his own interpretation. And just like that, he’s off.

She looks on as he leaves the cavern, a thought forming in her head. If she wants to be the strongest, she’ll have to defeat him in battle. It will be a long time from now, but once she’s strong enough, she’ll try. And she’ll win. She was certain of that.

It’s pretty late by the time Jemmy leaves Granite Cave, and when she wakes up the next morning, she takes a walk along the beach, discovering an entire new route to the east of Dewford Town. Here, on Route 107, she fishes up a Tentacool, promptly turning into a Snorunt named Moonstone. A female Snorunt, too–if she can get her hands on a Dawn Stone, then perhaps she could evolve her into a Froslass. If.

At last, she is ready to depart from Dewford. She talks to Mr. Briney, where she learns that Mr. Stone asked her to deliver the Devon Parts, too. Her destination? Slateport City, to a man named Captain Stern. So, they set off towards Route 109, where more trials and tribulations await.

@Xionahri Thank you! I'm glad you like it. The early game has been pretty easy so far, but I'm sure things will heat up as we progress through the game.

Hey there! I'm terribly sorry for the lack of updates. Sometimes inspiration just refuses to strike. However, with the onset of the pinglist feature, I've created a pinglist for you all to join:
