it's because he looks like an anime boy. no one in particular, but an anime boy nonetheless.

i like raymond and wouldn't mind him in my village (though i already have two other smug boys, kyle and marshal), but i do agree the hype over him is odd. his deisgn isn't THAT great considering there are some amazing ones who are underrated. i guess because he looks like an anime character?
never understood why marshal was popular either even though i like him. he gives away gold DIYs a lot but other than that...i dont get it.
i saw raymond going for over 300$ in a bid on ebay last week. it's their money but...yeesh.

Office worker + cat is the best combination possible, though. That's what my main is in City of Heroes. I usually don't care for the mega popular villagers (Julian, Marshal, Beau, Freya...), but the strong appeal of the cat who is a businessman is clear to me.
Regardless, I probably won't play NH anyways, but I did play all the previous games. Also, the best villager is Klaus.
