Before I start talking about my stories about these viral infections for computers/mobile phones, I have to give off some rules for this thread.
- If you exactly know what virus/worm/trojan/whatever you got, PLEASE don't share the link where you got it from. You can mention the title (such as the infamous Goggle).
- If the virus included some... adult fun adverts, don't talk about such in detail.
- Don't go in too much detail about your age, location of time, etc. As the Policies states:
Quote:
In the interest of your privacy and safety, we ask threads and discussions in this forum remain focused on topics such as favorite TV shows, movies, games, hobbies, shared experiences like school or work, etc.
So, malware. Everybody has got it at least once. But there are some nostalgia behind getting them, especially for me.
The first what comes to mind is
CursorMania. You know, that one where you could change your cursor to different things. As a small lad, I didn't see any risks in it, but now I do. You see, it's a trojan. It made Internet surfing slow. And also, if you majorly used Internet Explorer/Opera, it would connect you to a botnet called DragonDog. I didn't know about that until I checked recently.

I don't have any stories, but I love watching this guy's videos:
https://www.youtube.com/user/danooct1/videos
He shows off a lot of old viruses and they're really fun to watch!
back in ye olde days of LimeWire, I had to get my dad to download music for me that I liked so I could put it on my MP3 player, since I was a kid and he knew how to do it. He downloaded a shady MP3 of "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus that looked fine until it was on the computer, then there were a few copies of it, the titles written in Chinese. I don't know anything about how viruses work, but it slowed my dad's computer to a crawl, and eventually it stopped working entirely.
sorry dad :,-)

I managed to install some malware that would just.... Play ADS randomly.
You would literally just boot up the pc and in the background you'd hear some advert playing.
It got so bad we had to reinstall windows.
Another time I went on a really dodgy site to play some hot wheels game when the pc just. froze. turns out the motherboard was fried or something?
Idk if that was bad luck or if it was more malware lol

My mom used to have 2-3 different toolbars thanks to Cursor Mania and another similar thing. Lol This was back in the early days of internet, when she used AoL and stuff.

I'm going to show my age here, but...
Back in the late 90s, everybody was completely obsessed with these little desktop pets, which obviously were viruses. My school had to ban anyone installing these desktop pets because every single computer in the school was infected. Multiple times.
But my fondest malware memory is the first time I disinfected a computer. Back in those days, antivirus software could tell you if you had a virus, but it wasn't very good at removing them. They'd just come back the next time you restarted. So removing a virus in those days had to be done manually, and you had to do it very, very carefully.
You'd have to delete the virus files in the right order, and then you had to edit the computer's registry. If you did that wrong, the best thing that would happen is you'd fail to remove the virus. You could also break your computer.
Removing my first virus from one of my dad's friend's computer, at the age of 14, took me an entire Saturday morning, and I was paid £10.

On a school computer I once found a virus that killed Microsoft Word, and the printer that I printed my paper to.
Suddenly everything went red-lined, and the lines kept moving all around the document. And as soon as it tried to print itself, the printer completely died. Nobody could print to it, it kept spitting out ink, and then it just died. I don't know what tf happened to it, but I couldn't use the computer anymore either. It was a mess, but slightly hilarious at the time to middle school me.
