i have a few! if i bond with a character, like kinda connect with them, i start drawing em a ton (like when i buy from someone). if i still feel it after drawing expression challenges n stuff ill make a full ref. if after that im still lovin it then they become a main!
my five current mains (yeah five) are lucifelder spaniel, elijah pit bull, potion goatimundi, walker demon, and troye mutt! only walker is my own design haha but i love them all equally

I've got one retired fursona near to my heart, 1 main fursona and 4 other tertiary fursonas.

Her name is Noot McBeans and she’s a dranguin made of jellybeans. I chose dragons and penguins because they’re really neat and the fairy/ little blue penguin is from NZ! Also penguins are chubby but have big personalities >;)

it took a looonggg time to make my fursona, i went thru about 2-3 fursonas before i came up with purity.

I think it's different for everyone. I've always loved dragons since I was a smol child, so it was clear as day what species my fursona would be. But it doesn't always have to be like that. There are others who choose their sona by which animal suits their personality best or what looks the closest to their RL self.
The good thing about the fandom is, that you have so much creative freedom. Can't decide between two (or more) species? Just create a hybrid! Want to be something entierely new? Sure, go ahead and create a new Species!
And of course there are also people who have multiple fursonas or change species if they feel like it^^

I have two fursonas, my new main one is a Cheetah/Snow Leopard hybrid. I love cheetahs and my twin loved snow leopards but she passed away so I mushed the two together. My other fursona is a brown wolf with blue accents which I'm looking at changing sometime soon. She doesn't really fit ME anymore so I'm trying to figure out what she needs to fit me.
You can have as many or as few fursonas as you desire!

I've never quite settled, always chose what I felt closest to only to scrap and replace it when I grew distant. I'm pretty sure I'm still not done, but I'm way further than I was 10 years ago. Maybe in 5 more years I've got it figured out.
