Now, I'm not a furry, My friend is though and she wants her fursona drawn. Her birthday is coming up soon and I would like to draw her fursona for her. The problem is I can't draw anthropomorphic animals. I can draw people, but not anamorphics. So I would like to ask how you guys learned how to draw them and any tips you could give. And for my own curiosity how did you guys figure out your own fursona?

“The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things.The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice-versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
I dunno, I try to "fuse" the human an animal anatomy! For example, I have a "race" of bird people that I guess could be called furries. So, since they are birds, I give them feathers, un-pronated hands, short torsos and birdy legs. If you were drawing a cat, you might give it a really long torso and short, digitigrade legs! It's up to you Like these two. It does depend on the "style" of anthro you like though! You could totally just plop a dog head on a human body, and that would be just as good as a mix, though learning animal anatomy is helpful even if you aren't drawing furries ahah Edit: Sorry, forgot a ping. @Abogado

@Quadruped
Thanks for the tip! I honestly do mostly realism which I think is why I'm having trouble with them. I really like your birds BTW

I draw more towards the realistic side too, but tend to keep them looking like slightly morphed normal animals, like the user above me! For example I have a maned wolf character I draw and she keeps similar proportions but I just stand her upright. It might help if you can find reference images of the animal jumping!

I personally learned how to draw by watching cartoons/anime throughout my childhood.

I just wanted to pop in and say how much I adore your birds. They are well done and interesting. And look plausible as a fictional race!

Too many people tack a beak onto a human shape and maybe giving them mammal-like digitigrade feet that end in bird toes. Looks super lazy to me personally. Reptiles get the same treatment too.
Considering what the might actually look if real like gives the art so much more life, even if unlike those they are drawn in a less realistic style.

--

When I have to draw this sort of thing my stuff usually ends up reminding people of Brian Jacques Redwall series; basically just bipedal animals with some type of functioning hands.

Actually a tip, if you are looking for ideas on more realistic looking "furries" try looking up "Anthro _____" or "anthropomorphic ____."
Anthro art tends towards more realism, while furry tends more towards cartoonish.

@Ankokou

Thanks for the compliments! I'm glad that they communicate "plausible"! I just like drawing birds too much to strip all the "birdiness" from my anthros ahah

@Abogado one thing I heard was to look at skeletal structure and try to merge the animal skeleton with the human one. Like this perhaps?

Im not a furry either but i get quite a good bit of commissions with furries and all i can say is that its hard but all i do is draw a human body, slap fur on it, add animalistic features and bam. Just make sure the anatomy works XD This is the only one i have for now but hey it works right?
