hello!! apologies if this has been done before, but i'm a bit of a knowledge fiend, and very much a words nerd, and i got to thinking about canonical dragon naming conventions. so! yesterday i read through all the bounty of the elements stories and recorded the names of every dragon in them, by species and flight. (unless it said otherwise, i assumed everyone in each story was of the flight in which the story was taking place.) i also counted in the npcs from the trading post and a couple from the grand exchange! here's what we got! didn't include everyone from the grand exchange because there were kind of too many of them and i couldn't tell the flights of any of them very easily [*]for the grand exchange/trading post dragons i did include, i mostly referenced the [url=https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/gde/2813080/1]canon lore compendium[/url], which is a fantastic resource! [*]swipp, pipp, and tripp have been referred to as "the swapper clan" [*]on the obelisk encyclopedia page, it says that "First generation obelisk dragons frequently have names associated with positive emotions. It is thought that they gave themselves these names to carry on the hope that the Earthshaker had when he created them. Subsequent generations are not born with intrinsic names, and will ascribe to naming conventions typical to their adopted clans." [/LIST] from all of this, my conclusion/theory/headcanon is basically: [LIST] [*]dragons typically have 2 names-- a first name and a clan name [*]the clan name will be the same for everyone in the clan, the first name will be unique [*]clan names are generally tied to the flight the clan belongs to-- i.e. Freezeclaw, Sunspark. some of them seem like job-names (a common origin of family names in real life, like the human last names Miller or Baker)-- i.e. Rockbreaker. it has been stated that some clans choose not to affiliate with a flight, and these clans probably have neutral names (like the Swappers), maybe more likely to be job-based [*]individual clans have various naming conventions of their own for first names. sometimes the names will be influenced by their flight (Juniper, Craklinne) but not super often [*]if someone takes on a role (like Magister or Deepseer), they will be referred to as [role] [firstname], or [firstname] the [role]. perhaps they drop their clan affiliation as they take on a role more significant to the whole flight than to an individual clan? [*]i'd imagine dragons who change clans usually take on their new clan's name! maybe some dragons keep their old name as a sort of middle name or hyphenate it, like people who are changing their last name might do? [*]i don't really see any name patterns based on breed, with one exception: aethers have the [i]weirdest freaking names[/i] [*]xXxDarkStarxXx? [i]xXxDarkStarxXx???[/i] [*][i]HOW DO YOU EVEN PRONOUNCE THAT?????[/i] [/LIST] thoughts? comments? any notable npcs i missed?? naming conventions you use for your dragons? what your clan's collective name might be? let me know! this was a fun project and really got me thinking about lore, so i hope it's helpful for all of you :D

[url=https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/frd/1112431/1#post_4651218](source)[/url] - higgins is probably shadow, based on purple eye color - patches is probably water, based on eye color + there was a roundsey dragon released the same week that appears to be patches...? with water bright eyes [url=https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/drs/2829281/1#post_42456232](link)[/url] - glass and gloss are probably plague, based on green-red eye colors - the rest of the grand exchange/trading post guys i also agree are too dubious to say for sure what flight they are LOL, but i think listing them under their respective breeds would be helpful!

I love that you did this, thank you so much for the resource! Funny enough, it was your conclusion/headcanons that got the gears in my brain moving and I think I'm a step closer to figuring out some of the lore rattling in my head haha
