I really like how the festival familiars have two features incorporated into their designs lately with the snake flowers last year and the gryphons this year. I’m very excited about the upcoming gryphons so here are my thoughts:
(Some of which are very much in line with other people’s suggestions)
If they stick to raptors:
Fire: Red tailed or Red Shouldered hawk/tiger(The magnificent eagle sound effect)
Arcane: Scarlet Ibis/mountain lion (think Thoth from Egyptian mythology)
Plague: California Condor or King vulture/mongoose
Earth: Great Horned Owl/lion or Burrowing owl/meerkat
Ice: Snowy Owl/Lynx or Snow Leopard
Shadow: Magpie/black panther
Wind: Peregrine Falcon/clouded leopard
Water: Heron/Fishing cat
Nature: Harpy Eagle/Ocelot
If they deviate from raptors:
Fire: Golden Pheasant/Tiger
Arcane: Galah/Mountain lion
Plague: Shrike/Mongoose
Earth:Shoebill Stork/Lion
Ice: White-tailed ptarmigan/lynx or snow leopard
Shadow: Potoo or any nightjar/genet or Starling/black cat
Wind: Swift/domestic house cat
Water: Seagull/fishing cat
Nature:Quetzal or Toucan/Ocelot (woodpeckers seem viable too)
My brain exploded thinking of plague birds. Everyone already really has good suggestions for Plague and I’m just sitting here, completely blank. I would die for a plague pigeon or a secretary bird as many have suggested.
Everyone is on the same page about ice which is. . .
cool. I am hoping for a ptarmigan, but a swan could work really well with a snow leopard too!
Water surprisingly has so many cool options? Seagulls, albatross, herons, puffins, swans, g e e s e, penguins, etc. Although they get the short end of the stick when it comes to the feline half. All things must remain balanced, I suppose.
My brain is fixated on a ground bird for Earth. I was even hazarding to say ostrich but the color scheme might be off. For some reason, a roadrunner seems likely. . .
I’m hoping Arcane deviates from the raptors and goes with a parrot for intelligence. The more I think about it, the less viable it seems though considering light has an eagle. I would die of happiness from any parrot gryphon, although that would make for a very silly face with a giant beak.
Ok, so hear me out for shadow. We’ve got a diurnal eagle for light so we have to go with a nocturnal raptor for shadow, right? Yet again, we have another contender for an owl. Sure, you could go for the Barn Owl with its terrifying screech and deep orbs of black or even a corvid such as a crow or raven should you wish to depart from the nocturnal theme; corvids are tricksters after all. However, consider my guy the Potoo. Nocturnal? Check. Deep eyes of black? Depends on the picture. Goofy? Oh, yes. Will he scare the living daylights out of you? Only if you bother him.
Nothing much to say for wind besides that a Peregrine Falcon seems like the obvious choice for a raptor. Wind is all about music though, you could go for a lyrebird or a parrot. The entirely airborne species of swifts which I suggested seems like a good choice as well. Surprisingly, wind has a limited scope of selection? No wonder Tomo insists they hate birds.
Nature is usually green, and you know what else is green? A ton of parrots. :D
There are so many tropical birds to choose from, I hope they deviate from the raptors here as well. Birds-of-paradise would blow my mind but I would be content with a toucan or a quetzal for the sake of g r e e n.
I’m hoping they subvert expectations with a rooster gryphon, but that would just be a cockatrice, wouldn’t it?
I tried to post some different suggestions from others. Alas, my brain is of the same opinion as everyone else. I wonder if all of the gryphons are already designed at this point?
