Since the friends list isn't particularly important to me I just accept any friend requests that come with a "Hey I'm sending you a friend request" message of any sort. I will probably clean out my list once Arlo is officially implemented though, ucz I got a lot of inactive people or people I just don't talk to anymore on there.

Yes please. There's a thread of people looking for friends and people are posting there if they're open to/want requests. Please check people's profiles to see if they have something that says they aren't open to random friend requests and don't be mad if someone declines.
