Oh, I love this. It really does describe that shape of foot perfectly, not to mention Snappers are heavy and it's really hard to imagine one moving quietly.
Back to the original question, though: I find it tricky myself. Sometimes I've sidestepped it entirely by referring to "digits" instead of the entire paw/hand/whatever. But in general, the more handlike-looking ones can be called hands, while the more pawlike ones tend to get forepaw. Basically I'm thinking in descriptive terms.
