we all know why these guys have the girls look like perfect models whereas the dudes can be just fish people[/quote]
I dunno maren dudes also look pretty conventionally attractive to me
Anyway who said maren had to be fish? They can be aquatic mammals, like whales or dolphins or something. In fact you can tell by their tails they're not fish, since they have horizontal tail fins. The crotch on the ladies is bothering me way more, and also the fact that Wavesinger and Scout's tails don't look natural at all but rather like they just pulled on a bodysuit. And the fact that their tails are bent like they have knees, even though that seems to be a pretty common art mistake >.>

It's just an artistic choice. That's pretty much how I'd draw mermans/mermaids if I had to draw some. They're lovely to me.

Artistic freedom. Also??? There's actual people who look like that (take away the marenness ofc). There's lots of cool headcanons that can be made. Maybe the purple maren are carrying eggs, or maybe they store food in their body to feed their young, maybe none of them are cis.
Crotches don't matter.

They're mammals, so the females have breasts. As for the way their tails look, I agree with @RoosterTeeth's explanation, though it's true they shouldn't have such a sharp bend in their tail. The later maren look much better in that regard:

Yeah I reeeeeeaaaaallllly don't like the maren wavesinger and scout art, for that reason. Probably my least fave familiars, come to think of it.

Do you like familiar matching~?
Come check it out.
I'm asking about this in the Q and A.

I think it was the best way to show different genders and it's just more conventional. It's the classic way to present a mermaid, my only problem is that their top is covered up and the male's aren't. think a lot of you would be complaining if some of the art didn't feature breasts or feminine features because then it would be excluding feminine people.
And yes, I know that not every female person has breasts and not everyone with breasts identifies as female, before someone comes after me.

Oh my god is that beluga for real? It looks terrifying.
This is kinda why I refuse to farm in the Kelp Beds, because of Maren and how the monsters never seem to die (they are killed but somehow still have a turn in battle??).

@RoosterTeeth
You sure about that? It seems awfully solid and shaped for flub.

Beluga flub looks like that sometimes, but not all the tine, and it's more of a hip shape than a clearly defined crotch, even when it is like that.

Even in your image there isn't that same defined indentation as there is on the maren art.
