It's basically the equivalent of your mailbox getting filled with junk mail. Sure, it isn't a huge deal to drop it off in the trash/recycle on your way inside, but it's still annoying that you're forced to deal with it.
People just have the option to chew you out with this kind of junk mail since your name is right there.

I don't mind being pinged as long as it's relevant. Pinging me to reply to something I said? Great! A breeder letting me know about new hatchlings from a pair I asked about? Also great! A raffle organizer pinging me to tell me I won something? Wonderful!

I like getting pings if:
*it's in a conversation about something;
*it's a notification that I won something in a raffle/contest, that someone finished art for me (although I haven't bought art on this site, this is just a good example), someone bred a baboo from a couple I signed up for;
*in dragon narcissism/"ugliest dragon" etc. threads because sometimes I like to share and get opinions about dragon aesthetics;
*if it's about something the pinger knows that I have interest in participating.
I don't like getting pinged about buying/selling dragons I have no interest in making transactions with, getting free raffle tickets, for getting referrals etc. If it happens once, twice, I just ignore it. If someone would do it repeatedly, knowing that I have no interest in that particular nature of pings, I'd let them know my mind.
