@Macabre Oh wow, how cool! :O I want to try that next time. :D

Also yeah, blue dye is absolutely awful. o_o I had to use it for the modeling chocolate and even though I didn't use much, my hands and clothes and counter had a blue tint for the next day or so....

@maplebit @Macabre

Blue or purple anything, I swear >.> I used blue dye in my plague entry last year (to get a proper blood red as opposed to more orangey-red.) Spills some on the counter oops >.>

And I was simmering berries in my really nice enameled stock pot for sorbet. I let it all cool in there too. Big mistake. The extra time it had to cool and sit stained the enamel on the inside sigh.

(Also yes, maplebit, this is reality 8] )

I always try look the whole thing instead of just concentrating on the final product. And what comes to baking in the middle of the night I have a habit to do that all the time - which doesn't make it a good idea. :'D

You got it, you get a cookie!

FINALLY catching up on commenting on entries (I’ll have my Host’s Choice up soon I SWEAR. I’m awful.)

@clanguadian – Minty Thundercloud Cookies

I love cookies that you roll into a ball and coat in things. My mum actually rather dislikes baking. In fact, whenever she’s baking she says “And this is why I hate baking” every 5 or so minutes (it’s hilarious believe me.) But she’s an excellent baker and around the holidays, I believe, she used to make cookies similar to these. So I got a bit nostalgic when I saw them. Also, I just love cookies I can primarily use a cookie scoop with and forgo rolling pins etc.

@Macabre

I rather like that you went with blue velvet cake (rather than the typical red.) Though it’s rather surprising how it’s gotten decently popular recently. I think I even saw a blue velvet cake mix box in the baking aisle the last time I was perusing it.

Red/Blue velvet is actually my suitemate’s favorite cake so I’ve made it quite a few times. She never knew you could make it red without dye though. It’s actually been quite a while since I’ve seen someone make an icing with flour (though I think it’s a bit more traditional with red velvet than cream cheese frosting.)

I may need to try this recipe out for myself, just to see my suitemate’s face xD

@Snek – Nopales con Huevo

This looks so good! And despite living by so much desert all of my life I’ve never had cactus before. I really want to try it now. I rather appreciate that this is quite simple.

Also bacon. Need more be said? I also always love it when I see people use the fat/grease from bacon to cook other ingredients in. Sometimes if I make a large batch of bacon I’ll save some of that in a container to use in place of butter in skillet cooking ^^;

@darklordavy – Breakfast Burrito

Very much love that you account for that piece of bacon that ALWAYS gets eaten after you finish cooking up bacon xD. I also just truly love breakfast burritos. So much. I love breakfast anything I think.

Something I might suggest (as I usually do when I see people cooking eggs especially scrambled), is to add a splash of milk/cream to your eggs when you break them/whisk them. It helps them be fluffy and creamy in an amazing way. So long as you don’t have issues with dairy (I do but I find that small of an amount isn’t an issue though.)

And you too, A+ bacon and bacon grease use.

@StormEater - Lightning's Blueberry Symbol Cake!

First off. KITTY! I want my own Line Cook Kitty. Not fair.

Major props on making a vegan cake etc. I made myself learn vegan substitutes and whatnot as a friend is vegan. I hated her feeling left out as my suitemate and I would bake a lot and she couldn’t have any the first time. And A+ Lightning Emblem use.

I imagine the bit of lemon in the cake went beautifully with the blueberries. It’s not something you see people do that often unless they’re going for a REALLY lemony cake. I often wish I’d thought cut the sweetness of a dessert with a bit of citrus, or something, after the fact.

@maplebit

To start, this cake looks absolutely amazing and kudos to you for going for it. I probably would have second-guessed myself too much to accomplish it.

Also, coffee, chocolate, and hazelnuts? (and pop rocks?!) You combined so many things I love. I also always like chocolate cake recipes that have a bit of cream cheese (or something along those lines) in there. They’re just so moist and beautiful.

I hope your sugar glass cooperated while you were dealing with it. Mine did not want to for the Plague contest last year (or whenever I made that monstrosity.)

@darklordavy - Baked Salmon with Heirloom Tomato and Feta over Sauteed Spinach

So, I will start of being very honest. I can’t stand cooked fish. There’s something about the texture and the way the taste changes that I just… can’t. (Also tomatoes but the opposite. They have to be fairly thoroughly cooked. I can be quite picky because some tastes just overwhelm all others for me.) I love the other ingredients though.

This looks quite beautiful and fresh though. It makes me want to actually try it, which is an accomplishment in and of itself ^^;

@Vedis - Deluxe Tempest Spire Cupcakes

First, I just want to congratulate you on tackling these when you’ve never baked before. I know a lot of people who haven’t baked find it really intimidating, so just going for it is great. You chose such a fun set of recipes to start out with too and your mix of flavors were all great choices! Plus, you decided to go for it with fondant on your first go-around. You did a great job and how you bounced back from issues (as I saw etc. on skype) is admirable.

It’s not even remotely fair how cute these are and the idea to use the cotton candy was great!

@Snek – Daily Report Dessert

So, it’s not super often that I see someone actually use shortening these days. I’m curious if you notice any differences between it and butter when you make frosting? Also, is the meringue powder for gloss, or some stiffness, or? (I’m just very curious as I don’t do decorations with frosting very often myself xD)

But this was such a cute and great idea for the Lightning Theme. It came out so well too. I have shaky hands (familial tremor) so this sort of thing is not my forte.

@Quib - Gelatin Flowers and Stormy Night Gelatin Dessert

I saw coffee in this and was IMMEDIATELY on board. Put coffee in something and I will try it and probably enjoy it in some way.

These are just SO COOL looking. I really want to try doing this now (and probably massively fail at it lol.) Actually… I really want to try this as like… a topping on top of a multi-layer cake (like you would with a gelee.) I bet it would just be so great looking with the flowers!

I bet my suitemate would love the grape flavor too (she loves grape flavor almost anything.) Must try.

@cmf25 - Land of the Stormcatcher

I LOVE Cupcakes and Cardio. I just love their videos, they’re SO HELPFUL. I actually used to make chocolate ganache on the stove (it was kind of a pain) until I watched one of their torte videos (I believe.) They just heated the cream in the microwave, dumped the chocolate etc. in and MAGIC. Legitimately changed my life as it made ganache so much less of a task and now I just put it on everything.

- Coughs – now that I’ve stopped flailing >.> Definite kudos for using buttercream for decorations. I’m just SO bad at it and yours turned out cool looking. Also, did it take a ton of dye to get that grey (and the black?)

@Scultone - Thunderbolt Tumbleweeds [AKA Rocky Road Popcorn Balls]

I love popcorn… and marshmallows… and peanuts… and chocolate. So basically these sound amazing. I want some right now (even though it’s like 6am and I’ve not slept.)

I need to go make these ASAP.

@Eialyne - Shocking Summer Sours

Primarily-lemon anything and I am totally down. (I should make some lemon sorbet soon…) I bet it tastes quite refreshing and looks so cute to serve.

It’s interesting that just going back and forth with a whisk, by hand, worked a lot better. I wonder why that is, hm. I wonder if it’s a personal thing as I know circular always works faster for me. It could be down to the technique and the ease at which the motion comes to a person individually though. As the back and forth may go faster for a person that circular.

@Vedis - Cream Cheese and Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms

Once again, going to be honest from the start >.> (and probably get a lot of shock from some people.) I hate mushrooms. It’s a texture thing and most people think I’m insane ^^;

But, I love the rest of the ingredients and these turn out looking SO amazing. I bet these make great appetizers, depending on the size.

@Eialyne – Stormy Skies

It just sounds so good. I want some, right now, despite it being very early in the morning. Please come make me some!

I’ve never actually heard of RumChata and I am now very intrigued. I must look into this. Also chocolate syrup, already a win.

@Fernpaw - Ultimate Summer Cheesecake

I love cheesecake. So much. You can’t even comprehend my love for cheesecake. So I was excited when I saw a cheesecake entry come in!

I also almost always prefer fruit cheesecake/fruit with my cheesecake rather than chocolate or something like that. I just prefer a more crisp tasting cheesecake most of the time.

I just looks so good – grabby hands –

@Sade - Ginger Kickstart

- Perks up – did I hear caffeine? I need caffeine.

:o limoncello! I love limoncello and I know very few people who actually know what it is/have heard of it.

I’m curious, what sort of ginger did you use? Freshly grated or?

@Vedis Healthy Afternoon Sandwich

It was a cute idea to recreate a dash from a show you like. Especially so to try and make it a bit healthier.

I love breakfast sandwiches (gods I just love breakfast foods so much.) I need to try that dip the next time I go by Trader Joe’s. I always want to try their dips but tend to be iffy on those things unless someone can vouch for it. This one sounds really good though.

@Sade - Make-it-work Mutton

That name, is so great. I just, the moment I saw it I knew I would LOVE the entry.

I’ve never had mutton before, but the combination of the mutton, berry sauce, onion jam, and quinoa just sounds great. I can only imagine how great it turned out!

Also, it’s always fun to see what people put together when they’re trying to use what’s on hand. I’m really bad at it (as my repertoire is rather narrow to pastries/baking, some very basic cooking, and a few flashy French dishes lol.) So I always love seeing how other people do it to see if I can’t learn something from it!

@Eialyne – Falafel Pie

I love falafel. So much. It somehow never occurred to me that there were mixes that I could keep at home and use myself. My eyes have been opened to something beautiful.

This actually looks really good (though personally I’d remove the tomatoes but that’s me haha.) It also definitely looks like a dish you can have fun playing around with the presentation. Especially if you decided to make it for friends or something.

WOO! Caught up on all the entries and I SWEAR I will have my Host's Choice up today @.@ I just wanted to get that up first (and I've been quite torn about who I would choose there are so many great ones.)

@Shellhead

This was my first time eating cactus too! It's kind of subtle and I think I would munch on it in tacos again. That recipe makes a lot of filling. You should cut it in half if you don't have people helping you eat it.

Frosting made with butter melts easier. The meringue powder helps the frosting and decorations hold their shape. :)

Thank you! The cooking contest was a blast.
