LORE
Spanded Salamanders are unique creatures. Known for their signature combination of spotted bodies and banded tails, Salamanders come in an incredible variety of colours depending on their environment. Their powerfully malleable magic has allowed them to adapt to a wide range of biomes, and they tend to absorb high quantities of ambient magic, making them excellent ways of monitoring magical changes in the environment... if one is able to properly study them.
Though Salamanders are semi-draconic, they are not true dragons, and as such their eyes do not reflect their elemental affinity. However, their colourful skin tends to do that job for them. Indeed, the skin is where much of a Spanded Salamander's magic resides, allowing them to bounce back most spells and swim in the most dangerous of substances unscathed.
The black bands on their tails appear to either store or disperse energy depending on their need, and can make for powerful weapons when a Salamander feels threatened. However, Salamanders are rarely aggressive, nor are they especially wary. All Salamanders' skin and blood are toxic to varying degrees, and combined with their unnatural toughness, most beings know to leave them well alone.
Though Spanded Salamanders can be found all over Sornieth, they seem to avoid areas with heavily populated settlements. This is probably for the best, as their strange magical properties and propensity to wedge themselves into nooks and crannies are likely to cause interference with draconic magical structures.
All Salamanders are omnivorous to some extent, but the bulk of their diet consists of insects, followed by plants.
