Dragon Introduction
Quartz
Fear made her leave
Love made her stay
|
Quartz was found by a caver who got a bit ahead of himself exploring a new cave system. Dashing ahead of his group, twisting and turning through the tunnels until he found himself in a huge cavern. The only light coming from his faint headlamp passed down from his father, he swept his gaze from left to right, marveling at the natural structure he had found.
Then in the corner, something shiny caught his eye. Fixing his gaze on it and making his way closer, he could see the pink crystal, covered in dust and buried in the rock. A grin spread across his face. A gem like this would sure make his mom proud!
He started trying to dig away around it, chipping away at the rock. He could hear the rest of his team calling out to him as they caught up. He lifted his head up to call to them, to let them know he was ok. But then heard something. A small creaking sound.
|
Turning back towards the crystal, he saw something there that wasn't there before. A white eye staring at him.
Jumping back in fear with a startled yelp, his headlamp clattered off his head and went out. All around him he heard loud scratches and cracking, as if the earth itself was coming apart. Shouting out in fear to his team he drew his wings around himself and sat huddled there in the pitch black as he felt dust and rock rain down around him.
When his team made it to cavern, once again shining light, all the saw was the young caver sitting - still terrified - by a huge hole in the rock.
---
After that rude awakening Quartz had shot out of the cavern and, once seeing more of those strange dragons she had never seen before, rushed past them in a flash. Through the twisting tunnels, further than she had ever been before. She didn't realize it at the time, but she was following the path that the group of cavers had come down in.
It was about to be the first time Quartz discovered the surface.
Sapphire
Anger drove her to the surface
|
Sapphire sat wide awake, surrounded by the darkness she had always known. They had come back again tonight.
Echoing throughout the tunnels and caves she could hear the screeching, the scratching, the screaming of the creatures that haunted the underground. Buried in the rock she knew they couldn't hurt her, but she still hated every second. She hated living her life in fear.
Hopelessness welled up inside her. It felt as if she was going to live like this until she died. Lamenting on this fact her despair led way to sadness. Tears welled up in her eyes as she felt the rock press in around her. She had always found the rocks comforting, meaning safety and home. But at that moment it felt as if they were suffocating her.
|
But then suddenly all she felt was anger. Anger at the rocks for trapping her, anger at her family for dooming her to this life, and anger at herself for never doing anything about it. With a shout she kicked the rock and felt it shake all around her. A momentary spasm of fear passed across her chest - what if it attracted the monsters? But as white hot anger poured into her once again she realized - she didn't care.
Suddenly feral, as if she really were being buried alive, she started clawing and thrashing her way out of the rock. It was hard work to move this much this fast but she felt an unstoppable urge to get away from everything. This could surely be heard for miles around.
Finally making her way into a cave system she knew she started dashing towards the direction she had been told to never go - up. Not even stopping to listen out for threats she shot off, desperate to escape. Twisting her long body through various tunnels and holes she didn't stop, not once, not even when the howling and screeching grew louder and louder. She just ran.
It was night when Sapphire reached the surface, but even the faint moonlight was blinding. Although she didn't have much time to admire the outside world before she collapsed in a heap, feeling the most exhausted she head ever in her life.
Closing her eyes she strained her ears and steadied her breathing. And for once she could hear it -
Silence. With a satisfied smile, Sapphire slept without fear for the first time in her life.
Garnet
A battle involving 3
|
The two huge imperials crashed into the ground, writhing, scratching, clawing, biting, fighting with all their power and might. It was brutal. The shrieks could be heard in the surrounding villages, casting an uneasy mod across the night.
A huge tail slammed into the ground, sending dirt and rocks flying and leaving a huge gash in the earth. Long claws pierced through flesh as the two rose up into the air once again, only to crash down and shake the land for miles around.
The land that was once a meadow that lay in the shadow of a huge mountain was unrecognizable as the haven of flowers it had been the day before. It looked like a god has dragged his hand through the ground stirring up all that was there.
|
The fight raged on, shouts and screams echoing throughout the land. Red blood stained the mud and uprooted flowers. And as the sun rose and the battle drew to a close, the winner proudly taking flight and soaring away, almost nothing of beauty was left. The ground had been turned upside down.
But through the mud and the dust lay a rock different from the others. It sparkled red in the morning sun.
Garnet slowly unfurled her wings and dug herself out of the ground. It looked like it was finally over. She tilted her head from side to side, trying to figure out where she was. All she knew is there was a bright light coming from, somewhere.
Then she noticed the breeze on her face.
For a moment she was frozen in panic, felling so exposed and alone. But as the sun warmed up her crystal scales she relaxed. She could hear the sounds of birds singing, returning home after the chaos of the night before.
Maybe she would like it here.
