He was previously caught, but apparently the Gaolers never picked up on the sleeper agent the Shadowbinder had planted in the Fortress of Ends, who broke him out last NotN. This boy is very shaken and anxious, as he's constantly paranoid that something from his past will come back and put himself and his family in danger. He's also selectively mute, unable to speak to anyone other than his mate and son unless he is playing a character, and taking on a different persona (which is a leftover skill from his spying days that he now uses as a coping mechanism). He hasn't been re-gened yet, but Vale is a Hunter-Gaoler: A disgraced Gaoler who committed a crime so offensive to the Icewarden that he was frozen into the ice for thousands of years while still conscious, basically driving him insane. These broken, often deranged creatures, shells of their former selves, are then unleashed on the Southern Icefield's most wanted criminals. They are not allowed to fail. Vale remembers nothing about his past life except his name, and while that bothers him he's scared to try and research his past, either because he thinks it will be horrible or because the other Gaolers will almost certainly stop him. He's too busy with the hunt, anyway-- he barely stops enough to renew the illusion magics that make him look like a tundra! He is Sleetshade's adopted son, so his life is still in danger, but as there is no obvious proof or resemblance tying them together he can travel freely without being arrested. Frostgaze, despite having more independence than both of them put together, is still very close with his parents (Dad and Ghost Dad, as he refers to them) and often brings them back presents from his trips to the south. He loves hunting and tracking elk for sport, but never actually kills any animals he tracks, so those presents are usually pretty impressive antler carvings.
