They had been lucky, this time. Able to rummage through the bags of the centaurs looking for supplies. Strips for bandages and a few old leaves were mostly what was on hand and the only meat was the centaurs themselves. Luna turned up her nose at that idea, she was not going to eat those beasts, not if if it was last thing she did.
There was an interesting stone found in one of the bags Luna dug in, round, blue and covered in... Erzulie paused in his search of the bags and started at the small stone Luna held in her claws.
“Let me see that” he reached out and took it, rolling the small ting in his hands delicately “Well ill be... its an egg!” he exclaimed as Luna looked at him in confusion “See..? it looks like like yours did.. but much smaller! It certainly cant be another mirror like you!” he took one of the leaves and carefully wrapped the egg in it and placed it in one of the satchles before he gingerly placed it over his unharmed shoulder. “soon, you might have a small playmate” he chuckled before he cringed at the pain of the wounds.
Luna watched him wrap the small egg then frowned and looked at him with concern “Hurt..” she repeated, still not good with words. She gently nuzzled up to him then urged him up. “Trees?”
“Yes, Luna.. to the trees we go” he nodded and got up to slowly start the hobble to the trees.
By nightfall they had arrived at the thick thatched of trees. Once under the cover of its thick leaves over head, Erzulie collapsed on the leaf littered ground and sighed “I am sorry Luna, we will have to go out hunting.. in a few hours, I need to rest”. Seeming to understand, the mirror flopped down on the ground beside him and started digging at the ground to entertain herself.
He healed over a few days, Luna by his side keeping him constant company. Erzulie checked the egg constantly, keeping it close to him to keep it warm , often tucked into his fur at times. Plant gathering was easier in the thicket, more to choose from and no more salty seaweed. Fresh water was easiest in the morning, when the dew collected on the leaves and that could drink from there.
Over these two days, Luna had grown immensely, feeding off of the small rodents and birds they could catch, even if Erzulie was very slow as he mended his wounds. She seemed a good hunter, always eager to hunt for new prey when Erzulie was not looking, or tending to the egg that would likely hatch at any moment. She watched the older tundra, concerned with how slow me moved and the ache in his wing and leg, if only she could help more.
An idea had struck her as she now stared at him, the night slowly starting to creep in. How wonderful would it be if he woke to find a pile of meat and leaves!! she could feed them both! And the new hatchling when it came! Her tail twitched in excitement as she tried not to make noise as he got up, no need to wake him right? She was big enough for this! She peered in the dimming light and grinned as she slunk off into the deeper part of the forest.
