The one son who remained was the dragon named Neptune, named for the great seas his father hailed from.

He was poised to take control of the clan when his parents grew too old to. He let this prestige go to his head--taking a mate as soon as he was able. When she passed on prematurely to the arms of the Gladekeeper something clicked in Neptune's mind. Call it maturity or just sorrow--he was no longer so open.

But, mate after mate, he began to feel a deeper emptiness. He no longer desired the title of clan king. He didn't want another to love and lose. He just wanted to be alone. With a heavy heart he took on the solitary job of patrol--moving through the forests like a green mist despite his massive size, until his melancholy essence began to permeate into the earth he passed.

Emptiness twisting, winding around him as the weight of age also caught up to him, until he forgot his original form, his original name.

What he did not forget, after all that, was the sea.
