Her dominion extended over the realms of death and rebirth, and she could appear in the form of a beautiful, seductive woman or a terrible goddess with a skeletal head, jaguar claws and butterfly wings covered with stone blades. The Aztecs believed that butterflies were in charge of taking warriors' souls, who died in battle or were sacrificed, and the souls of women, who died giving birth, to their resting place. Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico coincides with the arrival of the migrating swarms of Monarch butterflies.
