14 January 2024: A second fissure eruption begins in the Svartsengi volcanic system, Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. This fissure was further south than the December eruption, and though it was shorter (roughly 1.5 km long), its location was much worse. The main fissure broke through the protective barriers meant to prevent lava from entering the nearby town of Grindavík, and a second smaller fissure formed within the town, destroying three homes. The lava output eventually localized north of the barriers, and the whole eruption only lasted two days; had it been longer or further south, it would have only been worse.
