______ Lights, blazing into existence, wash over the gathered crowd of dragons to illuminate the rich purple of the curtain drawn over the makeshift stage. The balmy air of the evening suddenly feels charged with electricity and magic, a far cry from the small town’s usual atmosphere. A voice booms over the crowd, “Once upon a time, there lived a lovely prince.” Its cadence seems to come out of nowhere, and yet at the same time echoes around the crowd like a living thing, breaking the hushed mood.

In a blink of magic, the velvet curtain disappears to reveal the stage. The locals gasp together, a few wings flaring up with surprise – and then their shock turns to awe. A dragon poses before them on his hind legs, his wings swept artfully up and around him to give him an air of nascence. The magical stage lights from before have dimmed slightly, and his eyes glimmer in the new shadows.

He’s beautiful. An imperial, his pale violet wings adorned with delicate, winding flowers that match the color of his exceptionally long mane; sweeping over the slant of his jaw, its braid looks as though it could brush the floor when he was on all four legs. His scales are draped with gauzy purple silks, and gold jewelry winks from his wings and claws. Pink candles emitting rosy smoke drift slightly away from him – more magic, more delight.

“The son of a powerful sorcerer, the prince was expected to take up his family’s legacy, and make proud the long line of magic he claimed.” The dragon begins to move, shifting into a low, weaving dance. The candles move with him, bobbing around him in the air, sending flashes of warm light out across the stage. Somehow, even as his torso twists to allow his long body to writhe like water, an air of regality still surrounds him, connecting his movements to the narrator’s words. A tune drifts out of the wood behind the stage, reedy and trilling. It emphasizes the dragon’s flexible motions even as they happen, and lends mystery to the magic already in the air. The crowd stands captivated.

“At first,” The disembodied voice of the narrator continues, “The prince was content with this life of finery.” In one move, unchanging from the general flow of the dance, the imperial stands rigidly upright to salute, his expression serious. “But then, one day while traveling, the prince came across a troupe of dancers. And he fell in love.”

The crowd gasps as a comically large red arrow, adorned with a heart for a head, comes shooting out of the backstage to ‘embed’ itself in the dragon’s claws and heart. The dragon braced for it, caught the romantic weapon, and crumples gracefully to the ground. His wings flutter out across the stage. The audience murmurs in sympathy.

“Not with another dragon, you see, but with the art of dancing itself.” The narrator’s voice is grave.

The dancer rises, slowly, his head turned upwards towards the sky. His wings quiver. The music swells with him, almost with a life of its own. The magical light, golden and beautiful, funnels around him to create a spotlight as he rights himself. Reaches upwards.

“The prince had found a calling. Overjoyed, he returned to his homeland to tell his parents of the happy news –” The dancer on stage rushes forward, and stops abruptly just at the edge of the stage. “But they did not see it as a gift. The prince was banished, thrown into exile, for disgracing his family and name."

The dragon throws himself backward with force, sinking down to the stage as if wounded. The dance changes, switches from one of intrigue and fantasy into something darker, more desperate. The dancer flings an arm forward as if pleading, but seems to be fighting against invisible bonds, and is eventually dragged backwards. “And so he could never return to his homeland.” The dragon picks himself up, stumbling, and begins to walk in a circle around the stage, his head held low.

“But,” The music changes, twirls upward into higher notes. The dragon’s wings twitch, jerk upwards as if tugged by strings, coaxed back into form. Slowly, he falls back into the movements of the first part of the dance: graceful, fluid, and joyous – “The prince gained something. He could dance, and he could do it well.”

The dance comes to an elaborate culmination with the end of the story, a climax of the themes explored; love, loss, joy, and movement, all portrayed in the coil of the imperial’s tail and the way his body twists. When he stills, the dragon stands poised at the edge of the stage, stretching his neck out to reach for the sky once more. His silks and antlers gleam in the light. His chest heaves with exertion.

The crowd erupts into cheers.
