Lore

=

Copy-pasted from a summarised, crudely written comment I made on a forum; to be written up in a more detailed manner in the future!
To try to summarise my concepts for his lore so far, Nameless was abandoned by his plague-traditional, ‘only the strong can survive’ parents very shortly after he hatched(so soon, in fact, that they hadn’t even named him) due to being the runt of the litter, and was left to get picked off during the night by either another dragon or one of the other ravenous denizens that prowl the Scarred Wasteland. The fact that he lasted the first night was a pure miracle, seemingly a fluke.. then he survived another. And another. Three days became a week, then two. Though he remained sickly and frail, left scarred from the close encounters he had already experienced in his short life, a desperate desire to survive burned bright within him, pushing him onwards. By the second month, things had began to take a turn for the little spiral; he had managed to befriend a young hound also prowling the lands, forming an alliance with it using its natural hunting tactics and his elemental abilities to bring down fresh prey, and to find carcasses to scavenge from. Though he was unaware of it, he had drawn the attention of something.. of someone. The rotted goddess herself, the Plaguebringer, had been watching him for some time, amused by the continuation of his wretched existence, and decided to appear to the orphan.

The deity had shown herself to him, claiming to be there to congratulate him on his determination and ingenuity.. and to make him an offer. Nothing major, of course.. in return for her divine blessing, a gift bestowed to precious few, he had to continue this existence. Never in his life would he be allowed to join or form a clan, living out the rest of his days as an outcast to society.. a small price to pay, she had said, in return for what she was offering him. With a hesitant incline of his head, Nameless uttered his agreement, binding their contract; the moment the words left his lips, a smile as sharp as daggers flitted across the Plaguebringer’s skeletal features. With a flick of her mighty talon, she carved the rune of plague into the spiral’s hide, a permanent mark of her influence, and vanished in a disease-ridden vapour. Hunger, fierce and unyielding, began to gnaw at his insides, like the teeth of a dozen wolves, growing heavier as the minutes ticked by; it didn’t take him long to realise that something was horribly wrong. He had been granted many boons — with a metaphorical stomach of steel, he was able to eat almost anything he came across without inconvenience, and now the sickly aura that had resulted in his abandonment both physically and mentally affected those around him, making them hazy and weak-minded, giving him an advantage when both attacking and escaping, among other things — but also carried a price much heavier than first anticipated. No matter how much he ate, he would never truly feel sated. That awful pain would never fade — not completely, anyway.

As agreed, he continues to roam with his hound at his side, travelling the Wasteland as he always has; though scars still cover his form, they are worn with a grim pride alongside his many grisly adornments, trophies from his well-earned victories. Though he still goes by no name, that hasn’t stopped local clans for making ones up to describe him with. The Rotwyrm, Carrion, Maggotfeast, Fleshmangle.. Cannibal.. all of these have been used in tales and rumours, whispered around fires in the dead of night. Whether these are accurate titles, or merely exaggerations of the truth made to frighten.. no one can really be sure. Few have encountered him, and those who have seem unwilling to talk.

Trivia / Assorted Facts

: Among my elementally-blessed dragons, Nameless is the youngest! He’s in the draconic equivalent of his mid-teens — not quite a full-fledged adult dragon, but no longer able to be truly considered a hatchling.

: Nameless is something of a habitual chewer — it’s something he has always done, presumably as a self-soothing method. His tail, in particular, often gets gnawed on, especially when he’s feeling downcast; as a result, it has to be bandaged regularly to prevent infection.

: He is unofficially adopted by Papa! Though he might not be one of the guardian’s most frequent visitors, he really appreciates their company when he does go to see them, whether it’s to share news, exchange gifts or simply talk. There aren’t many opportunities for a friendly conversation out in the Scarred Wasteland.. of course, he cannot stay for long, and very rarely stays for longer than a few hours at a time, but that doesn’t mean he dislikes spending time with Papa.

: If he had been given a name by his parents at hatching, he probably would’ve been called Maggot. Not exactly the kindest or most pleasant name, but his parents weren’t particularly kind or pleasant dragons.

More to be added.
