Bijou, Part 1
Lost.

Somewhere in the Starwood Strand...
Dark clouds blanketed the night, and heavy rainfall soaked the Starwood Strand. The sky's sorrow mirrored that of the little dragon that wandered here, her tears mixing with rain as she sought shelter under the trees. A flash of lightning and a rumble of thunder startled her, and she clutched her stuffed toy closer, shivering with the night chill.
She shut her eyes tight and she sniffled as more tears fell with the rain. She looked all around, her eyes wide and round as she searched desperately through the darkness. But what she longed for most was nowhere in sight.
She lost her forever...
Her mother...
Shutting her eyes again, she wailed. Crying for her mother, Bijou squeezed her stuffed dragon tighter, her tears soaking its plush hide. She still cried, calling for her mother even when Bijou knew she wouldn't answer.
Giving in, she sobbed into her plush dragon, its hide muffling her cries.
She suddenly heard something, and froze. What was it? Was it her mother? Her eyes were round with fear and hope as she searched the darkness, and what she now saw bewildered her.
A huge silvery Imperial stood just a few paces away, her pale eyes meeting the tiny dragon's. She didn't come closer, and the little Snapper hiccuped as more tears slipped.
“Are you lost, little one?” the Imperial wondered, her gentle face mirroring the child's sorrow. The little Snapper whimpered, and the Imperial softened her voice. “I'm not going to hurt you,” she reassured her. “My name is Lament.”
Another tear slipped down Bijou's cheek, and she sniffled again when she spoke. “La...ment?” she croaked with a hoarse voice.
“Where is your family, little one?” Lament hushed.
More tears cascaded from Bijou's eyes. “I don't know...” she blubbered. “I lost them...I can't find my momma...I want my momma...” she wailed.
Lament came closer as she cried, huddling beside her and tenting one large wing over her, shielding the tiny dragon from the rain and cold. Lament nuzzled her gently, and the little Snapper wept into her shoulder. Lament said nothing for several moments, allowing the child to cry into her warmth and letting one of her own tears to fall.
“I'm sure your mother is very worried about you,” Lament hushed. “And you must be scared, too,” she added softly.
Bijou sniffled and looked up into her pale eyes, nodding as her jaw quivered. “I didn't mean to leave...I wanted to see all the pretty flowers...I don't know where my momma is...” she sobbed.
“I'll help you find her,” Lament promised. “And I'll keep you safe.”
Bijou sniffled again, and another tear fell. The dark clouds began to clear, now taking the rain with them. Stars glittered in the night sky, reflecting in her eyes and making them twinkle.
Lament leaned down closer to the ground, helping the little Snapper climb up onto her shoulders. The tiny dragon dropped her plush toy, but Lament retrieved it, offering it back. The child squeezed it, hugging it close as if she might lose it, too.
“What's your name, little one?” Lament wondered.
“Bijou...” she answered with one last sniff.
“That's a lovely name,” Lament hushed, giving her a gentle smile. “Let's go find your momma. She'll he so happy to see you again.”
Bijou smiled back, and one last tear fell. “I will be happy to see her too,” she murmured.
As Lament set off, her smooth gait gently rocked Bijou to sleep as she snuggled into the Imperial's mane.
