Biography
A traveler was wading through the deep snow of Reclaimer's Glacier when they stumbled upon a corpse.
The frozen wildclaw – an author from Starfall Isle named Will – had last been seen in the Fortress of Ends, where he'd spent a season on writing retreat. It was clear that he'd died crossing the deadly glacier on his way home.
Will's newly finished manuscript was in his pack. The traveler brought the pack to Will's publisher on Starfall Isle. The book was frost-bound. A slow thaw let the pages peel apart. The story was dedicated to an old gaoler Will had met in the Fortress of Ends who'd lost her mate to a Horrorbeast. Will had penned a happier ending for the two lovers.
There was a latent magic between the pages that seemed ready to burst. With some coaxing from a Starfall mage, two dragons – a wildclaw and a coatl – sprang from the book's inner world. They were the characters in the book, given life.
Will's widowed mate was a coatl. That was how the mages knew the author had mixed the old gaoler's tale with his own.
Four lives—shattered by the Southern Icefield. Two souls—thawed from frozen ink.
