Visible matter is thought to make up only a tiny fraction of what exists in the universe. That is everything we can currently observe, either with the naked eye or with specialised equipment to detect forms of light invisible to us, such as ultraviolet or infrared.
Over a quarter of the cosmos is believed to consist of dark matter- something which occupies space and has mass, like the matter we can see, but is completely invisible to us. Scientists believe dark matter exists in a web-like structure throughout the universe, a gravitational scaffold that attracts normal matter. Galaxies behave in ways that can only currently be explained by large areas of them being made up of dark matter- such as moving at speeds to fast for them to have the amount of matter we can actually see.
Just under 70% of the universe is thought to be composed of another, even more mysterious substance- dark energy. The universe is expanding more quickly than it used to, and nobody can explain that. The leading theory is that the universe contains dark energy, which works in opposition to gravity- pushing the universe apart rather than pulling things together.
