Nephalia died long ago – there is no life to be found here. She’s driven by bloodlust, perhaps some of the most ravenous in the Crimson Order. Some call her a shell of a dragon, as at times, it seems there’s nothing left of her soul. Just a mindless drone driven by hunger, more of a zombie than one infected with vampirism. None of the dragons try to make contact with her anymore, they just watch as she wanders the halls of the crumbling castle, aimless and slow, dragging her feet against the ground, making a distinct noise of claws scraping on stone.

The rest of the Crimson Order is tasked with making sure that she doesn’t get out. While they’re not against infecting others, letting Nephalia out would be certain chaos. The hunger would quicken her steps as she drew closer to prey, and there would be nothing left of the town. Those she didn’t kill would flee at the sight of her – blood covered and brazen. She is a weapon of certain destruction. The rest of the Order had even considered banishing her to the catacombs, but Silas and Lillia’s protests put a halt to that decision.

Nephalia hadn’t always been like this. Her mind had slowly faded away – she’s been undead longer than almost everyone in the order. She’d refused to feed, unwilling to hurt another dragon after she’d been turned. It was okay for a while, but the other dragons noticed as her mind began to slip away. First it was her speech, slowly slurring and becoming harder to understand. Then, her movements became more erratic and uncoordinated, her muscle memory failing her. Still, she refused to feed.

Silas and Lillia had known her in the before time, before she lost her mind, before she became a walking corpse. When she was wise and all-seeing, when her kind heart was there to guide the much younger dragons forward in life. She cared for each and every dragon of the Order, even though she didn’t agree with the other’s practices. She never scolded the younger dragons for feeding, she knew that the hunger was just too much for them, they needed the blood to thrive. She only taught them everything she knew, of their history and how to make sure the Order stayed strong in uncertain times.

They’d lost that guiding voice many years ago, when Nephalia spoke her last words. No one remembers what they were, each dragon remembers them differently. No one knew those would be the last words she’d ever speak. They’d taken them for granted – they knew she was declining, but the Order refused to accept that their wise ancient was fading away. Until, Silas bounded up to her one evening, ready to go on the walk they’d always shared at sunset. Immediately, he knew something was wrong – there was nothing behind her eyes. Not a glint or a glimmer to be found. Dead, soulless eyes, and a haunting gaze that he could’ve sworn looked through him instead of at him.

Still, he asked her, “When will we go for our walk?”

There was no response, and Silas stood slack jawed as Nephalia slowly turned around, dragging her feet and walking away from him. It was then that he knew she was gone.

What the order doesn’t know, what no one could imagine, is that deep down, buried inside the flesh of this walking corpse — she’s still there. It’s a consciousness that’s screaming in agony with no control over the body, only wishing and praying that someone will be able to see her one day. As the days go on, Nephalia continues to lose hope, banging on the walls of her own skull for anyone to rescue her. Someone must see the fight still inside her.

Someday, someone will notice.
