Worlds were chessboards, and their inhabitans its figures. Krabat was, perhaps, among Sornieth's best players — honed by the dedicated priests of the putrid mother herself, he was taught in the elusive art of false promises and serpentine charme, skilled at bending those around him to his every beck and call. In days long since gone by, such assets served him well in negotiations with tyrannical queens and corrupted companies, ensuring the best possible outcome for his own ambitions. Now, however, he exploits these abilties to compliment the arrogance of a deluded empress, and appease her desire to fling native subjects into a purgatory of her own making. No more naught a shadow pulling the strings of monarchs, his allegiances to the virulent fields of rot and decay are evident to all those who surround him, perhaps more aware than ever that he directed their ruling powers in past years. Without proper guidance, the elusive black prince has unwittingly become the voice of those who stand lost in the empire's shadow, seeking a mind that can bear the complex difficulty presented to a haphazard coalition of survivors. Though an ambassador's burden is heavy, none dares dispute Krabat's sly approach in a land reigned by disease-ridden abominations.
