Nightingale is something of a mystery to his clanmates, and that's exactly how he prefers it. He is an aging but not yet old dragon, with a robust career as a guardian and warrior, though his skills in acting are more often talked about. He was something of a jester in his adolescence, always eager to make others smile and laugh, though his bitter life experiences have soured him. He once sought a career as an entertainer, and was always ready to show off his skills in drama.

There was no terrible disaster that ended his aspirations, only time and coarse reality. He did well enough, but the clan had more dire need for more practical pursuits, forcing him to leave acting and entertainment as a hobby. It was entirely possible to maintain such a hobby and still keep a job, but time got away from him, and the drudgery of day to day life has a way of robbing people of the things that they love. In time, his now-legendary skills were left behind, replaced by the increasing importance of his practical role within the clan.

Nightingale became the clan's hoard keeper, tasked with protecting the clan's riches and food stores. In time, this simple guard position accumulated more responsibility. He was trusted with logistical tasks, not only watching over the wealth, but deciding who was allowed to partake and why. He valued the position and treated it in an ethical, reverent way, but the seriousness that came with it was stifling to his artistic and playful side.

As time wore on and he continued to do his duty, the actor began to disappear. He took to his task with increased severity, even punishing hatchlings who attempted to prank him while he was at his post. Some of this new found dourness was a cry of self-pity, for everyday he thought about how he'd rather be doing something fulfilling and creative. The clan needed him, he reminded himself, and so he continued to waste his best years.

One day while he was still relatively young, a thief attempted to steal some of the clan's treasure. This wasn't so rare. Nightingale had fended off many thieves, but this one was particularly skilled. Nightingale succeeded, but he was left with a scar on his face which shamed him.

Embarrassed by the scar, he took to wearing one of his old masks again. The colorful mask sparked curiosity in the clan, who'd almost forgotten about the stoic hoard keeper's secret talent. The whispers began, and Nightingale himself started to feel a spark of inspiration. After spending so much time pining for his old way of life, he started to silently convince himself that it was not out of his grasp - and it never truly was.

Gradually, he began to pursue his old passion again. With the clan leader's permission, he hired underlings to serve as the guards, but placed himself above them as the head hoard keeper. He still made the important decisions and kept the statistics, but this gave him free time to explore his long lost love yet again.
