  • Lambda has always been a lone wolf and an adventurer at heart. She joined NC very young, partially due to her disillusionment with both modern dragonkind and her more traditionalist family after a tumultuous adolescence, but mostly because she bought the pitch of the 'final frontier'. She doesn't care much for NC's politics or any of the world-altering truths about the Shade, Riftkind, parallel universes, and all that abstract mumbo-jumbo. No- Lambda joined up to explore.

  • Lambda spent her early days at NC on the Rockhopper as apprentice to Captain Oortian.

  • About a year into her apprenticeship, the Rockhopper stumbled upon a derelict alien vessel floating dead in orbit just outside the asteroid belt; a sleek, ancient ship a dozen times larger than anything NC had built. A boarding party was assembled, but trouble began as soon as they stepped aboard. Although the ship had appeared dead from the outside, some of the automated defense systems were still functional and turned on the boarding party. The rest of the crew made a harrowing escape without any life-threatening injuries, but Lambda was trapped and had to be left behind.

  • A rescue was mounted 12 hours later by the crew of the Dreadram, who were better-equipped and had combat experience. Lambda was eventually found unconscious deeper in the bowels of the ship, lying next to several long-dead aliens in what was surmised to be the sick bay. Nobody is entirely sure what was done to her- nothing strange showed up when she was inspected by the doctor- but she's now the only one who can safely access the ship and, it would seem, interface with its technology.

  • The ship is almost dead, with only a handful of defense and life-support systems running on spare solar power, but Lambda strongly believes that the ship would accept commands from her if full functionality were ever restored. Most of NC's engineers believe the ship is simply beyond repair, but Lambda is convinced otherwise. Unfortunately, although she's a good engineer, she doesn't possess the miraculous level of genius necessary to singlehandedly fix an ancient alien starship. Communication to the outside world from inside the ship's walls is nearly impossible, and all other intruders- including drones- are immediately attacked by the automated defenses. NC has to make do with recordings Lambda makes personally, which has made it almost impossible to provide her with useful guidance.

  • Although unable to fix the ship, which she's dubbed Mirror, Lambda has made it her personal 'home base' and workshop and has quit her apprenticeship to spend most of her time there. She keeps the main ship intact, but smaller objects- 'artifacts', she calls them- are regularly sent to Asylum Station for study. A troubling percentage of these artifacts are weapons. The use of these to advance NC's own armaments has created some friction in a supposedly pacifist organization; the Dreadram in particular has benefited greatly from their discoveries.

  • The gaps between her visits to Asylum Station have grown longer, and the crew of the Rockhopper are worried about her. Staying in one place is unlike her; even the Rockhopper had been a temporary home. Gaps between her communication with the outside world have also grown, with her friends going weeks without hearing from her. Lambda seems to have... befriended?... some of the security bots, which follow her around like bodyguards. They have names, and she's painted their chassis with patterns to identify them. NC's counselor has expressed some concerns about her mental stability, but hasn't been able to find anything actually wrong with her. If anything, she seems to be thriving off the solitude and lack of oversight. Her increasingly obsessive interest in the ship is typical for a sandsurge. ...Isn't it?

  • During her most recent visits to the station, she's worn armor scavenged from the mirror-like alloy of the ship. At least, her colleagues hope it is armor. She has been warned of the dangers of integrating with technology we do not yet understand.

  • Radiometric dating has found the Mirror to be between 14,000 and 12,000 years old, dating from the Second Age; and various tests have confirmed that the ship is most likely extrasolar in origin. Analysis of the alien bodies, which were remarkably well-preserved by vacuum, has been difficult and inconclusive.

Einstein first proposed the cosmological constant (not to be confused with the Hubble Constant) usually symbolized by the greek letter "lambda" (Λ), as a mathematical fix to the theory of general relativity. In its simplest form, general relativity predicted that the universe must either expand or contract. Einstein thought the universe was static, so he added this new term to stop the expansion. Friedmann, a Russian mathematician, realized that this was an unstable fix, like balancing a pencil on its point, and proposed an expanding universe model, now called the Big Bang theory. When Hubble's study of nearby galaxies showed that the universe was in fact expanding, Einstein regretted modifying his elegant theory and viewed the cosmological constant term as his "greatest mistake".

Many cosmologists advocate reviving the cosmological constant term on theoretical grounds. Modern field theory associates this term with the energy density of the vacuum. For this energy density to be comparable to other forms of matter in the universe, it would require new physics: the addition of a cosmological constant term has profound implications for particle physics and our understanding of the fundamental forces of nature.

The main attraction of the cosmological constant term is that it significantly improves the agreement between theory and observation. The most spectacular example of this is the recent effort to measure how much the expansion of the universe has changed in the last few billion years. Generically, the gravitational pull exerted by the matter in the universe slows the expansion imparted by the Big Bang. Very recently it has become practical for astronomers to observe very bright rare stars called supernova in an effort to measure how much the universal expansion has slowed over the last few billion years. Surprisingly, the results of these observations indicate that the universal expansion is speeding up, or accelerating! While these results should be considered preliminary, they raise the possibility that the universe contains a bizarre form of matter or energy that is, in effect, gravitationally repulsive. The cosmological constant is an example of this type of energy. Much work remains to elucidate this mystery!

There are a number of other observations that are suggestive of the need for a cosmological constant. For example, if the cosmological constant today comprises most of the energy density of the universe, then the extrapolated age of the universe is much larger than it would be without such a term, which helps avoid the dilemma that the extrapolated age of the universe is younger than some of the oldest stars we observe! A cosmological constant term added to the standard model Big Bang theory leads to a model that appears to be consistent with the observed large-scale distribution of galaxies and clusters, with WMAP's measurements of cosmic microwave background fluctuations, and with the observed properties of X-ray clusters.
