Sometimes Kalira wondered if something was missing.
It was a silly thought, really. Both she and her two daughters had wonderful lives in Sorvie City, three average dragons amongst countless others. Alekin and Kirea had made plenty of friends, while Kalira worked as a detective solving one mystery after the next.
She was sitting in her office and looking at the profile of a missing Spiral.
Zirthe owned a small store close to the detective agency, and was only the latest dragon to vanish from the city without a trace. Kalira recalled how shocked and upset she‘d been when she first heard of it, but now she just felt calm and detached of it. Of course she was still curious where her friend had gone but sometimes dragons just vanished from the city and weren’t ever seen again. It was just part of life.
Then it was as though something had hit her, and she felt her chest tighten. Tears welled in her eyes and something in her head screamed that this wasn’t right, that Zirthe disappearing like that wasn’t normal and that she had to do something before anyone else she cared about became victim of the same fate. It felt as though intangible tendrils wrapped themselves around her head and voices began whispering, too many to count, their message unintelligible. Then it dawned on her.
Rein wasn‘t there.
How could she not have noticed? Her second heart, her other soul, he wasn‘t there. Gone without a trace.
Kalira‘s claws scratched across the wooden desk in front of her, leaving deep marks in it. She woke up every morning without him, couldn‘t so much as remember his name when her daughters asked where their father was. His entire existence had been forgotten. The realization of this wrapped itself around her heart, making it hard to breathe.
Yet as this understanding began to sink in, it started to disappear again, her trail of thought fading away already. It was like something was erasing-
Breathing. Blinking. What was she doing again? Kalira stared at her desk. There was the image of a dragon that had been missing for three days. She let her claws rest against the wood. The surface was immaculate as usual, which somehow felt… wrong?
No, that couldn‘t be it.
After all, life in Sorvie City was perfect.
